Is there any open source platform that may be worth looking at?

MeshCentral is the one and only.

I'm thinking a self hosted platform may be more secure than a publicly hosted (as in Teamviewer) platform. Is my thinking on that correct?

Not really, most likely self hosted is less secure. None of us have the resources to throw at security like the big boys do. "Self" generally means "less secure" in IT circles. Of course, that depends on good selection of hosted vendors and picking ones that are large and that actually take security seriously and throw resources at it. So having someone else do it is hardly a panacea. But like any security measure, going alone isn't the best path, but just going blindly anywhere is worse.

I think most of us, at least many, who do ScreenConnect do it self hosted. MeshCentral is self hosted, too. SC is no longer sold that way primarily (maybe at all), they are moving away from that model.

Self hosted is becoming more and more rare both in this specific arena, and software in general. But open source mostly protects against excluding self hosted. So MC is likely to be the big player left standing in the self hosted space.

Well with that in mind then, maybe staying with TV is best option?

@siringo honestly, TV is a decent option. Not my favourite, but I use it all of the time and it is a solid product.

I have been using Bomgar for Business and Itarian/Comodo One for Remote access for Windows and Mac (Which is free) for home users.

@siringo I use NoMachine myself. It works very well for what I need it it to do. Now that said, I don't anything about your requirements for software like this so take it with a grain of salt.

IF you have a limited number of machines - like 5 or less - ScreenConnect has a free version.

TV is a great tool - might think of implementing a Password change policy though.

MC and AD (AnyDesk) are good as well...

Nothing wrong with TV of you keep the passwords secure or manage them properly in the company web portal.

I've been using Teamviewer (TV) for years and had no problems, but last night I got a call asking if I was logged into a users PC as the mouse was moving, windows were being closed etc.

Did you tell the user to shut down the PC ASAP?

Does NX offer the same kind of service? We use NX, but for our VDI and it acts just like RDP. Which isn't the same here.

Hosted screenconnect, here. Have been using it for a few years now. Side note- Just added to one of the Macs we have and it works well.
