We have a new 2016 functional level domain. We have two Windows XP clients that need to join it. They are getting this error: ""

We are guessing that it is a functional level mismatch. Anyone know what is needed to do a join?

Rodrigo says: "2019 KDC issues tgt ticket encrypted by AES while Windows XP expects to accept it in RC4 encryption . This happens despite the fact that Windows 2019 KDC server is already configured to support RC4 .Moreover , in the same network, in the same domain the joining process is succeeded against 2016 or 2012 r2 Domain controller.
I suspect that this issue could affect all RC4-only clients like old linux machines that would like to join to 2019 AD"

Don’t you have to use 2008r2 functional domain and need to use smb 1.0?

No, they can join 2016. And SMB level is unrelated to the forest.

LOL, I tried to grab it and couldn't. Something about the DC no longer being available.

Gotcha, but Windows XP works with Server 2016 for sure.

                    Correct. 2016 yes, 2019 no.

I have been waiting for someone to ask the obvious...

WHY are you still using Windows XP??? Like... wow that is old.

But really - if it's what they have - it's what has to be used.

Are there any other computer OS Versions (Win 7, Win 10) - do they join okay?

I expect so. But maybe not, I think it might just be a flat upgrade fee to a new OS.

I assumed it was XP because "embedded" on some system.

This is a very common scenario.

Saw that with Server 2003. Issue (despite earlier thread posts) was caused by us turning off SMBv1

We have a new 2016 functional level domain. We have two Windows XP clients that need to join it. They are getting this error: ""

We are guessing that it is a functional level mismatch. Anyone know what is needed to do a join?

                                          So what is the error?

LOL, I tried to grab it and couldn't. Something about the DC no longer being available.

Saw that with Server 2003. Issue (despite earlier thread posts) was caused by us turning off SMBv1

Yeah - I've definitely seen SMBv1 disabled cause issues for older OS's, though can't be certain it was for authentication against AD.

I have been waiting for someone to ask the obvious...

WHY are you still using Windows XP??? Like... wow that is old.

But really - if it's what they have - it's what has to be used.

Are there any other computer OS Versions (Win 7, Win 10) - do they join okay?

                                            $100K update fee.

That update fee should be seen as a cost of business to ensure the business isn't being put at risk.
