We have a 2012 R2 RDS system used for SAP. It often gets super high CPU utilization, with the SQL Server Windows NT - Windows Internal Database process using easily 50% of the total system CPU (which is a lot as it is a 12 vCPU VM.) Memory usage is fine and normal. But this one process, used to support RDS, is using an absurd about of CPU for something that should be, in theory, essentially idle.

Any ideas how to troubleshoot and track down why this one process is so out of control? It is enough that it really affects the performance on the box, obviously. There are maybe 70 active users, which is a lot but other than this one process assigned to no user, they don't use many resources.

I would start with the simply testing and disable the service. If it isn't being used for this, the service doesn't need to run and no one would know the difference in the long run.

Event logging would give you some details but you're going to have to enable verbose logging on the box for anything useful.

It's needed, it is part of RDS.

@scottalanmiller Ah I misunderstood this "But this one process, used to support RDS" as in used to in the past.

Start with verbose logging on the server to see if anything stands out.

(for essential server. . . but eh)

What do you mean by SAP? SAP client?

What else is installed on the RDS server? There might be other applications using windows internal database.

Also, the database is just a version of SQL Express so you should be able to install SQL Server Management Studio and connect to the WID. Perhaps you can find out what the database is actually doing that is slow and that way find the problem.

Nothing that we know of that should have access to it. There is some print serving from that machine, but AFAIK that doesn't use that (and it is just serving printers locally.)

So are you using this server as an RD Gateway? and is this the Embedded SQL Database for the RDS Broker?

Perhaps this is a SAP thing. My RDS VM that supports about 25 users uses either 0% or 0.1% CPU, and about 175mb of ram. I am using this to publish our ERP client as an app to my users, and they are only accessing that app, not a full RDS desktop.0_1539043510828_RDS.JPG

@donahue that's more of what we would expect.
