HP switches "lifetime" warranty and opinions on 2540

What's the deal on the switches from HP?
Life time warranty used to be for the entire life of the product for the original owner but now lifetime means 5 years? How could 5 years be a lifetime? Are they only made to last 5 years? Or does lifetime mean different things depending on what product it is?
And I'm looking for recommendations for managed gigabit switches with 10G uplink and HP 2540 24G/48G seems to fit the bill. Any experience with these?

Basically HP is telling you that THEY feel that THEIR equipment has half or a third the average lifespan of Netgear Prosafe. Its' their way of informing you what they consider their quality to be.

Most of the Netgear stuff we've used lasts over ten years. The one we are on here is easily pushing 15. We've seen some die, but mostly stuff that was really old. Their firewalls, those we've seen die a lot younger, but not the switches.

Looks like a lifetime warranty on that switch according to this doc for original owner.

We run NETGEAR XS712T and XS716T at the entry-level for full RJ45 10GbE and other than a few firmware glitches they've been flawless as the fabric between storage (SOFS) and compute (Hyper-V).
For Gigabit the SG500x series Cisco switches (the Cisco/Linksys child) have been solid whether standalone or stacked.
We have a number of environments with both sets of switches, a pair of each, and they've been running together for years now with very little issue.

I cannot say I "liked" HP as much as the comfort level of the warranty and never being on site.

Do they issue security patches more than 5 years on the TOR switches? THAT is the lifetime, their commitment to patch issues.

That switch has a very interesting interpretation of PVSTP if memory serves.
For Gigabit the SG500x series Cisco switches (the Cisco/Linksys child) have been solid whether standalone or stacked.
Well the SG series is the old Linksys OS and thankfully doesn't follow the RFC so It looks like these two should just work together.

I've always had good luck with HP switches. Sure, I've had a few fail, but HP always honored their 'lifetime' warranty for me.
I know a lot of other folks here like various models of the Ubiquiti switches.

@pete-s wow no more than 1 year ago aruba switches (hpe) where served with real lifetime. Did they cut warranty so much?! Also they where replaced within 1 week.
I've seen a lot of netgear go crazy, but it was the unmanaged tier stuff.
