@lj update. I have installed Altaro VM backup and it recognizes the RD1000 and apparently has backed up my two VMs.I haven't removed and then restored yet. I don't think the VMs will be able to use the RD1000 but the Hypervisor layer can back up the VMs with it. I am making some progress. Right now it seems that I need Hyper-V manager, Windows Admin Center, Remote Desktop, 5nine file manager and Altaro to remotely manage one hypervisor and 2 VMs.

@lj I still would like the Hypervisor OS to be able to "pass through" the RD1000 to the VMs. If anyone here has that working please let me know how. Thanks.

That is odd. I do not have the hardware, so hard to help.

I cannot imagine that it cannot work on Windows. You probably just need drivers or something.

@jaredbusch the problem is it is not Windows. It is Microsoft Hyper-V server. I have made progress. If I type d: at command prompt I change to it and read the folders. Still cannotsee it, attach it or use it in any way from Hyper-V manager. That is where I think you have to configure it for pass through so that the VMs can use it.

There is an install for Dell RD1000 utilities but it won't run on Hyper-V. It would probably run on windows server and might help with the drivers.

Without listening to @scottalanmiller rant on Hyper-V versus Windows yet again.... For all intents and purposes, they part of Hyper-V that you interact with is Windows Server Core as far as compatibility with applications and such goes.

Look at this thread as an example.
                https://mangolassi.it/topic/11934/how-to-install-the-atera-rmm-agent-on-hyper-v-server-2012-r2

Yes, Hyper-V Server is not Windows Server. I say it all the fucking time. But for compatibility of stuff, you can still think of it in those terms.

                  Thanks.
It is installed in the program files (x86) directory which the install defaulted to. When I just tried again nothing happens. When I tried the RDXutilityhelp.chm I got the message Class not registered which probably has nothing to do with the utility running or not.
I bet you are right about it needing .net or something but I can't find any documentation of requirements.
Does anyone know what it needs?

@lj Got ahead of myself. It did install without .net. It just won't run. I cd to the directory and type RDXutility.exe but nothing happens.

The rd1000 with a disk in the slot shows up as D:. When I tried to use diskpart to set it offline it says "Virtual disk service error: the operation is not supported on removable media".
I don't think Hyper-V manager is going to let the VMs attached to it unless it is offline. Catch 22.
I think the RDXutility is the only way I will get this going. Thanks to everyone for your help so far.

I installed Altaro VM Backup and it recognized the RD1000 and backed up to it. I can backup VMs to the RD1000 but not the host itself. I don't think that will be too big a problem so I consider this issue solved. Next issue: Altaro free vs. Veeam free.

Altaro free just 2 vm. Veeam free no scheduling must backup supervised.

In any case both they are a no go. IMHO.

can automate with task scheduler, but still only veeamzip. always full.

@jaredbusch So Veeam Free only does full backups? I was afraid of that. Altaro trial does continuous data protection but I think that will cease functioning when the trial plays out.

You would have to purchase the Unlimited Plus Edition.

It does full backups and then it does incremental up to the retention days you specify and as many times as you want in the day.

Then I must be Mistaken, this screen is for the Veeam agent free. If we are talking about the back up and replication free then I know what you’re referring to.
