I realize the UNMS is the future. I am recommending Ubiquiti to a customer with 9 locations to upgrade as a part of our installation.

I havent used UNMS, just Unifi, and I am not sure if I can safely recommend they purchase ER-X units and install a UNMS server today, or if it still has quirks. In case of the latter I could just tell them to get the USG units and install a Unifi controller.

Just looking for some feedback as to what would best suit a production environment today. Particularly from @JaredBusch if he's around.

I think the decision is easier when you consider the alternatives. I'm rolling the Edge Routers because even if I have to manage them manually, I'd rather do that than pay for Meraki and that model year after year.

I can answer this one - no. There's no plan to use UNMS in place of the UniFi controller. THey do different things for different product lines.

At some point (Q4 of this year according to the released timeline) UNMS will be able to monitor UniFi controllers as endpoints in UNMS. This will be to make sure they are still there and get some basic info, but not to allow complete management like UniFi already does. UniFi Controller will remain the way you set up and manage the UniFi line of products.

@gjacobse Looks like he's asking if UNMS is production ready for the EdgeMax line of routers, not it's ability to manage Unifi products.

Yeah sorry, no meraki, no cross management. Just asking if bought today would you rather...

              UNMS + Edge Routers

              or

              Unifi + Ubiquiti USG Routers

If the UNMS with Edge Routers isnt production ready I would rather send them in a direction I know will work. I will have no regrets later because I am not managing any of this...

Is any part of this still in Beta? I remember last I was poking around a saw something to do with a beta firmware for the ER-X being required.

UNMS is mostly monitoring right now. Very little config can be done from it, however it does centralize device backup configs to a single place.

In regards to the capability of Units talking to UNMS, nothing with the EdgeMax router line is beta. Has not been for months. The EdgeSwitch was beta until last week or so when the latest firmware went from beta to production.

UNMS itself is still carrying the "beta" tag, but it is in full public beta release now.

UniFi routers suck horribly. They are just EdgeMax router hardware with different firmware anyway.

This is what you see currently when you click on an ERL in UNMS.

I can then click on Interfaces and then an interface and get this.

Routing, you can add a static route.

You cannot configure services, but you can turn some on and off.

Thanks @JaredBusch, can they use DPI to see who is screwing the internet with Youtube, they way they could do with a local ERX via the IP address on the lan?

@JaredBusch Would you run a Unifi Controller on the same VM as a UMNS? Or have them Separate?

No, the DPI info is not in UNMS yet.

UNMS runs in a docker container, unless you like pain.

@bigbear The statistics are just high level at this time.

The latency & outage is a measure from the unit to the UNMS controller.

You can click on almost any IP on any screen and it will pop it into a browser window. So if you have rules setup for that, you will be taken directly to the unit's login.
