When you have crappy backup software, and 11 TB of data that's need to be backed up and/or combed through,

Why not switch to a NON-crappy backup software?

you be wishing real quick it was to a DAS attached to that hypervisor, trust me. Nothing worse than a weekly backup that takes 4 days over the network.

You have DAS on every one of your hosts?

In an SMB, that's really easy to do.

In a multi-host setup, you could have a single host with enough storage to be your backup for all the rest.
Though in cases where you have a critical performance need, you might have enough extra storage locally to do fast recovery.

How is that DAS or did you not read the question?

If he is using host to mean DAS, it will work fine. But I'm not sure what he meant.

Because DAS is just local storage (just not inside the chassis) to the backup server.

Having DAS on every VM host would typically be unwarranted. So if you have a multi-host setup, you'd be much more likely to have a dedicated backup server/appliance, which may or may not use DAS instead of internal storage.

Even with two or three hosts, pretty easy to use a single DAS.

            Just like SAN ;).

No, the other hosts are nowhere near 11TB.

But my other hosts replicate their VMs to the host that does have the DAS attached to it. So I don't need to touch the other hosts. I don't care about those hypervisors, just the VMs on them.

Curious question: how is your DAS connected to the host - USB, e-SATA, USB3, SAS, JBOD ?

The business class options are SATA, SAS and FC. But almost always SAS, and then FC.

                    It's SAS.

The card I got was the PERC H810.
                    A cable like this.

Make sure you verify the connector of the DAS first. Newer models will not use those connectors. This was on a MD1000, very old.

MD1000...old school! I know those units. I've got 2 of them in storage gathering dust!

I have 2x LSI 620J. I might just connect it with LSI 9207E HBA

A separate SAN or NAS for an SMB deployment? It's an overkill. And a SPoF. And a lot of other things. I would go with two clustered servers and DAS in each. Since it's Hyper-V - you can use S2D https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/storage-spaces/storage-spaces-direct-overview to convert DAS into a single shared storage pool for high availability, fault-tolerance and failover. If you are aware that S2D sucks on less than 4 hosts - go with StarWind https://www.starwindsoftware.com/starwind-virtual-san-free (installs directly on bare-metal Hyper-V, works great on only two hosts) that does the same as S2D and is free. VEEAM for backups. That's it 🙂

If you don't mind the 3 gbps bus, the MD1000s are amazing.
