The right to be forgotten means if you committed a crime a decade ago, and served your time, that you shouldn't have to constantly announce that crime as if it happened yesterday. Especially so for things that are petty in nature.

And you think something like that relates to closing an account and giving up the right to control your own posting, how?

I'm giving you scenarios that have happened and courts have ruled on.

A forum account, is fully at will. Posting is at will. Closing your account is at will.

Yes, exactly. You posted at will, you gave up your ability to be associated at will.

As you are a proponent of keeping posts around forever for educational purposes you could be seen as infringing on the right to be forgotten of a person who chooses to leave the forums.

Nope, and if you think so, you've completely missed the conversation.

How? if they've deleted their account, how are they the owners of the data? How can they prove that they owned it if they voluntarily gave up that association?

You've clearly missed the boat if this is what you believe. Look at the court cases that have sided with people asking google (etc) to delete content that the person originally published!

But there is no such right, so the degree of illogical here is staggering. I don't know how to explain any of this to you. The amount of "none of this is what you think" is so deep that I'm not sure where to start.

In the US there is no right to be forgotten. In the EU there is, which means you'd (mangolassi.it) would very likely be expected to comply with these types of ruling.

We are not in the EU, therefore there is no such law.

                                    Things that I see wrong...

                                    1. You think that things on forums are not public postings like billboards. They are, period.
                                    2. You think that things that are said in situ in conversations that have been quoted are original content, they are not.
                                    3. You think that the US is covered by foreign laws, it is not.
                                    4. You think that account deletion is directly related to content deletion, there is no such association.

You are putting several misconceptions about the world together into one big mess of confusion. All of these are completely wrong. And you require all of them for your basis of argument here.

IF we were in the EU, sure. But this is still a community discussion and not likely subject to those laws. And still, this isn't related to what we were discussing. Which is the false association between deleting your control of content with the deletion of that content.

Does this forum allow users from Spain? Or any country from which a person might be covered under the "right to be forgotten"?

If so, yes you are required to be compliant with those countries laws, otherwise disallow users from those countries to post.

Where users ARE isn't related to the conversation. So again, why bring it up?

No, if yes we are NOT covered by laws of their country. In no way, whatsoever, is that how the law works.
