I discovered a thing! 😄 Well, not an exclusive discovery because all of you Yealink vets out there are going to say "well, duh." Of if you're Jared, you'll say "FFS."

So one of the challenges for our new phone system will be handling a workstation that has various sales folk rotating in and out. I decided against hot desking, as I want to keep the extension credential multiple characters of gibberish, and I'm not about to require my users to enter 20+ characters when the need to log into their extension. The solution I decided on was create line keys for each extension and train the users to press the appropriate line key before making a call.

Going through Programmable key options, I noticed the default for left/right arrow is switch account. This gave me an idea, and perhaps a better solution. Rather than having them press the line key each time they make a call, perhaps it would be more convenient for them to just press a switch account programmable key at the start of their day, and then they can simply pickup the handset and make their calls.

As nifty as this sounds, this isn't a panacea. I'll still have the line keys, so the user has an easy visual indicator of whether or not they should pickup the phone when it rings. Also, I intend to have Line Keys for dialing into some conference rooms that I'll have set-up. It appears such keys have to have a line configured (which makes sense); thus, I'd have to have X buttons for each conference room, where X = the number of extensions configured on the phone. -- unless there is a better way.

Any reason softphones won't work? - I'm guessing maybe because they'd still have to type in that 20 character gibberish to logon?

It has been dictated from On High that there will be a physical IP phone at that desk to be used by them. 😕

That also does nothing to negate the issue of how you get different credentials.

Softphone would be a great solution though, since all of the people have their own laptops.

                  Okay, that would do it.

I think what I'll do, is have the physical phone there, configure it as needed. Install Linphone (or the like), show them how to use it. And let them discover on their own how the softphone is the way to go. That'll give me user feedback that I can leverage for saying "let's just let them use the softphone, and this IP phone can be given to someone else / become a spare we keep around in case of failure."

I was kinda expecting the sales monkeys to each have their own device that could have a softphone on it, even if it was a SmartPhone.

In fact, moving to smartphone apps and no phone might actually be the best solution of all. I guess it would depend upon how much data they use while not in the office.

Not really. They don't work as good as one might hope. It is usually easier for the sales person to jsut call with their mobile. everyone is expected to have one anyway.

Yeah, not that comparing to Altigen is ever valid, but the MaxMobile app is "meh" at best.

Zoiper is just finicky at the best of times, and for whatever reason I've had no luck when on LTE instead of WiFi with it.

I use it regularly on LTE with little problem unless I am driving down 55.
