Perhaps it is that MS is just trying to make everything hard and trying to trick people into buying something else, when what they want is the free software.
It's always said that. It's a permanent evaluation. Always has been. There is no other version of Hyper-V.
Well iut no longer says it is a permanent evaluation though on that page like it used to. It does not have an expire date either, but it is listed differently than it was for 2012 R2

Yeah, that didn't help with the confusion. It's not limited, though. So the lack of limit leaves it open ended.

Yes you can! you can definitely put it in a VM, but only on that same hardware.

I don't believe that that is true. The VMs are stuck on the hardware, but the OEM License works just fine with them. I've never heard of there being any issue virtualizing an OEM copy of a Server OS.

There is basically no such thing as purchasing licensing with downgrade rights. All volume licensing has it. The only license model that does not is OEM.
No one should ever be buying OEM server licensing today.

The server has the COA on it. I'm wiping the server and installing Hyper-v on it and creating a VM that the server is licensed for.

Pre virtualization, it really did save a little money because you left it on that server till it died anyway. Most SMB would never reuse it. By the time their server died, they would be getting a new OS anyway. There was little point in going to VLSC back then for the SMB
