So I got my Ubiquiti AP setup the other night, and the setup was incredibly simple. Something it is looking to have is the Security Gateway.

Is this a piece of hardware only, or is there a software version of it?

Probably a noob question, just not understanding what besides the controller software is really needed. The Wifi works great, so looking for more to add-on to it.

It's the Unifi version of the Edge Router. It's a physical box.

Yep, it's a box, last time I looked it was $125 on Amazon for the baby box.

I wish the controller could see the EdgeMax devices. I understand it's the point of the Unifi line, but it would be nice to even get some statistics from the EdgeMax stuff.

Agreed, I really don't understand why they have these two separate lines?

I think the EdgeMax stuff is focused on WISP/ISP but you seem to have more control over the EdgeMax than you do with the Unifi stuff.

Because they are two very different things. One is traditional enterprise management SNMP gear. The other is "Smart" gear. Every vendor in networking has two lines if they have these two things.

Why couldn't they be in a single line? One device that can do both?

I'm not positive the USG can do everything the Edgemax stuff can - but it's pretty close. You just have to many of the more advanced things through the JSON file.

Because people who want the one don't want the overhead of the other, and people who want the other, don't want the complexity of the former. They conflict with each other.

What am I missing by not having the security gateway?

Unifi is UBNT's unique unified network management platform that ties their Unifi APs, switches and gateways together into a single panel view, a la Meraki. It can be hosted on premises or hosted off premises. It gives you most of the power of a management network without needing network engineers that know managed networks.

I wish they would release an EdgeMax AP. It's kind of nice to not need the full controller to manage one or two APs. I know you can use the phone app, but it would still be nice.

An non centrally controlled AP seems more consumer class to me. I'm sure there are other enterprise vendors who have them, but it seems to be going backwards.

Though I suppose since the EdgeMax switches are supposed to be managed by SNMP, the AP could be the same.

None of the EdgeMax stuff has a central controller. I don't think that makes it consumer class. Even if they just added the EdgeOS interface and OS to the AP. That would make it more expensive, but you could manage it directly from the AP.

IMO, needing to set up a full VM or installing a large program on your Windows machine, just so you can set configs in an AP isn't necessarily moving forward either.

That's why I mentioned Scott's mention of SNMP for management of them.

You already have this, it's the phone app.
