Any downside to getting an R620 in lieu of the R720?

I have a large soft spot for R620's - they seem to be real solid troopers. Keep em clean, they go forever.
Not that I've had issues with the 720's, just a long history with the 620s.

A bit more power usage (which could be huge over a server lifetime.) That's about it.

Assuming the same hardware in both (the R720 do have the possibility of more memory/hard drives), nope. Older generation servers almost always use more power than latter generation ones. Power supply efficiency improved between the R620 and R720 releases at the least, and the R720 will support more power efficient parts (not that they were necessarily used.)

Received the updated quote with R620 instead of R720, which came in about $600 less per server. Same basic specs expect for a drop in memory from 192GB to 128GB.

This reminds me of when I went to canada to purchase some older equipment for a friend of mine. Going into canada was easy. Coming back was the problem. I went through the normal passenger lane unaware that I should have gone through the commercial side both in and out. So coming back in they sent me over to the "building". I filled out the paper work to declare what I had in the van and described the equipment. They made some phone calls to confirm it was allowed back in the USA. I was unsure why it wouldn't be allowed back into the country, as it was manufactured for use in the USA - and was stamped as such. The customs person was very understanding, and suggested that next time have a broker do it. Or at least call the customs office ahead of time to find out what paper work you need to have filled out.
It likely didn't help that the equipment was paid for in cash, with no receipt ($500), and it was control equipment that is used to monitor temperature and pressure at a power plant....
Traveling into canada even for a meeting with a company requires a letter of introduction from that company explaining the purpose of the meeting, and whether or not there will be any "sale" or "transactional value" of the meeting. We were going up to meet with a banner ad platform in toronto and got sent to the building to explain ourselves.

In reading these stories about the Canadian border, I recall being questioned about how much cash I had on me, and how I was expect that amount to last me the two weeks I'd be driving through the country - of course the answer was, CCs.
They weren't any nicer when we walked across the bridge at Niagara either.

That's weird. I have never been asked something like that before.
It was 8 years ago, and I did say I was driving through the scenic route on the way to NY - then the question.

As long as there was a good reason and not just a sudden loss of RAM

RAM is often super cheap. Get it now and you'll probably find a use for it.

@thwr Those Samsung's make sure they are PM or SM series drives and not 8xx series garbage.
