ubuntu server shutdown "failed to finalize DM devices" device stays on
-
Hi guys, so my first question post here on ML... I have a PC build with brand new components I want ubuntu server on. Said and done, everything is running perfectly, but every time I shut it down it stops at an error "failed to finalize DM devices". By then it has shut down all Services and devices, but the power stays on. I have googled the hell out of it and there seems to be a bug in 16.04 LTS that no one has found the workaround for yet. Anyone run into this and figure it out? I don't really want to revert back to 14.04.

I haven't seen this issue personally, but according to the Ubuntu forums it is likely CUPS that is causing the issue.
Recommended solution, revert.

@DustinB3403 Thanks, but no cups on the install. Just Samba and Webmin.
-
Hrm.... curious.
-
@DustinB3403 Indeed! Never had any problems with Ubuntu server.

From the last 3 boot/shutdowns 2 were successful (with error warning), 1 not successful. Awesome....

Is this running on bare metal or in a VM?

@dafyre Mare betal. Doing a BIOS update.

Crap. Already the newest.
-
If this is a fresh install.... Does it happen with any other distros? (or Ubuntu 15?)
-
@dafyre Yes, just installed this morning, so haven't spent the time on other distros or releases. I think the most aggravating part is that it's sporadic. I would like to figure it out instead of going back a release.

I wonder if you could move back to an older Kernel? (assuming you've run updates)
-
@dafyre You mean like a downgrade to 14.04? AFAIK that is not possible without a clean install.
-
You should be able to, there is even a how-to.

I'm talking about the Linux kernel... the 14.04 is the whole Ubuntu version... From your server run umm...
uname -r
should tell you the version of the linux kernel...
Have you done software updates yet?
-
@dafyre Ah, gotcha. Yes, it is a 16.04.1 installation and is completely updated. I am running release 4.4.0-31-generic.

I'm fresh out of ideas for the moment.

@dafyre no problem, too much time on this would be a waste, it is a fresh install. Going back to 14.04. Just would have liked to figure out what it is, kind of feels like giving up...

lol. Yeah. I'm having an issue in my Tumbleweed install... also a fresh install, so I know the feeling.

Ubuntu 16.04 shutdown issues here, too. But it fixed itself after it updated.
