      Got it.
Based on that, we should use ASO or A2 for WP hosting?

if I had a time machine, I would have just stayed with ASO.

I DID like A2, but like I said, their customer service made me go hmmmmmmm...

I have tried quite a few hosts. A2 has been the best. The speed is great and service is good as well. One of the big advantages for me is the optimized wordpress install they offer.

Their install automatically sets up caching, CSS minimization, HTML minimization, database optimaztion, image compression (lossless), some other features. It also setups security on your site and renames wp-admin to something random, locks editing files (you can always unlock, etc).

You can turn any one feature off at anytime and it's a great time saver vs doing all those things manually.

That's with their top plan that included Turbo, I presume?

You dont even have to have A2 hosting to take advantage of that. Their are 13 speed enhancements available with their plugin. If you dont have A2 hosting you can use 11 enhancements the other 2 are built in to A2 hosting. All their plans offer the Optimized site.

I've been pretty happy thus far with A2.

I am trying them and ASO.

One thing I like is they assign a name to your temp domain, so it's accessible.

            Like mangolassiit.a2shared.com

So far, how is the comparison between A2 and ASO?

A2 has been fine but apparently I signed up "wrong" initially and they won't adjust my price moving forward. So I'll probably be going back to ASO.

What was "wrong" about your signup?

Did you do a speed test between ASO and A2?

No. Though to my eye they seemed similar.

Just a basic generic WP site.

                  I guess I signed up for a month-to-month?

So, the only way to get the advertised price is to sign up for a two year commitment and use their coupon, which is only available on first signup.

Net net, it's $12.99 for basic hosting which I think is pricey.

ASO is $5 monthly or $4.17 if you do a year commitment.

Forgive the necropost here, but I didn't see anyone mention just using Wordpress.com. Is the main reason for spinning up your own Wordpress instance with hosting provider XYZ just more for security than anything? Or are there other reasons I'm missing (I saw mention of certain types of optimizations with A2, for example)?

Some of the nicer (paid) plugins do not work there due to extra permissions or something.

Their site says "managed" Wordpress. Does that mean they actually patch the Wordpress server OS and application for you? I can see they definitely do a great deal of optimization that makes your site ready for use after 1-click.

Most sites do auto-patching of Wordpress since the standard tools do this for you.

Hostadillo does full managed WordPress, too. They even install plugins and stuff.

@BRRABill you can DIY your own on digitalocean for $5 a month and there are some options that make it pretty simple, or you could run a LAMP or WAMP from your own connection. It's kinda a pain and then there's noone to message when you're stuff is down to fix it...

That's actually what I have been doing. (On VULTR.)

I got tired of the slow speeds with every shared host I tried. Site is blazing now.
