So I was able to make another array, and was also able to make an SR on that array. It's still strange that I'm not able to use thin provisioning by default on install, but for now, it's working.

In scenarios such as these what would be the recommended backup approach: DAS, NAS, Backup Appliance, lower end server, removable disk storage, tapes (intentionally left out cloud)?

Should be separate (physically!) entity non-related to your production cluster. Cheap NAS is OK.

For the average scenario (and I really just mean average) it's Synology or ReadyNAS that I recommend. Easy, supported, cost effective, desktop or rackmount options, well known, good brands, nice features.

Does the VM I want to work from need to be offline?

      When attaching the disk? yes.

why? You can add new disks to VMWare while a VM is running without any issues. I'm pretty sure you can attach a pre-existing partition as well.

You can do the same in XenServer. At least with Windows as the guest. I haven't tried it with Linux.

You can't however do this if the source drive is running on a separate VM. (That VM must be powered off).

Which is what I did in order to do this.

Right, unless you unmount the source drive first. I don't even think VMWare can reliably do this.

VMware can do it reliably on its side, but it would still hose the data inside the drive.

Right, unless it's a cluster aware OS and Filesystem.

Just cluster aware filesystem. GFS2, OCFS, VxFS would all work fine.

I added a header into the main topic list for that. But it is going to be later in the Advanced Topics, section. Oddly, I know of pretty much no standard Linux Administration tomes that cover DRBD. It's so core, very odd that it so often gets missed.

Could it be that most Linux Admin's don't know about it until they go searching for it? ...That's how I found out about it.

You would hope that the people writing the books would know, though!

How secure is running a DE in the Dom0 though?

      Are they running it there?

      Ya.

Dom0 is sort of a system domain separate from the default domains and any other domains you create. The desktop manager runs in this domain. Your login credentials reside there. Much like a super domain, Dom0 is more trusted than any other domain.

It provides just two functions: It runs the window manager and the desktop manager.

Can I just plug this bootable into any old desktop and see if it'll light up? Should I expect any issues?

Can you, yes 🙂 It won't damage anything. Will it work? Not likely. You can't do this with any other OS or hypervisor, you can't do it with Xen either. That's why Xen has to be installed rather than there just being an image that you run. The installation process is the process of customizing it for your hardware.

We need some latency numbers from around the world. Anyone want to collect some for us?

Here is the first IP address. A long running ping (hundreds or thousands of pings) would be good, we need the final stats from that:

@it-admin 4 years later, I encountered the same issue that you did.

The solution for me was do do a PCI passthrough of the physical NIC directly to the VM. This bypasses all virtual switching inside Citrix Hypervisor. I posted the exact steps to implement PCI passthrough on Citrix Hypervisor 8.2 here:

      https://discussions.citrix.com/topic/414458-open-vswitch-not-passing-all-traffic-from-pif-to-vif/
