You can try disabling WSD on the printer itself, if it isn't a service for Windows to see perhaps it wont try to use it.

This is the same thing we do to avoid this nasty printer plague πŸ˜„

So if it doesn't provide privilege escalation and only allows you to access processes which you are running, then how is it really any different from any normal hooking? So yes, it's unpatchable in the same way deleting all the files in your own home directory in Unix is unpatchable.

Looking at the code as well... we were doing this stuff years ago to see what was being sent wrapped in SSL for reverse engineering purposes, because tcpdump or whatever couldn't read it.

I'm not sure where else to mention this, but Chocolately would be another deployment method to consider.

Yes, no native package, though. So we need to make one for it. That would be my personally preferred method, of course.

If the EXE has a silent installer flag I would run it as a startup or login task the first time. Just add a check in there to see if it has already been installed.

Meant to say I would put it on a share and have a startup script execute it with the silent flag. Drop a installcomplete.txt file somewhere on the local disk and query for that at startup.

Cool, that's the direction that I was headed.

I used to use the windows debugging tools. Set it up once on your workstation, use the MS symbols , then !analyze -v (if I remember correctly) on the .dmp file should spit out the offender.

Opening up RDP access (not necessarily from the Internet) but in general just opens more ports, more firewall changes etc.

Sure, but granting unnecessary access to the console does that, too. You need access to the VMs from far more places than you need it to the console.

I've had the misfortune of dealing with ESET and I can tell you, I don't agree with you in the least. We won't even let ESET in the shop, we literally don't trust the company. And it's reliability was terrible compared to Defender. Worst I've ever dealt with.

WHile I asked, I also searched:

      Reset Windows using Linux Mint

You can use Linux live CD and a program named chntpw will do the rest. You don’t have to install that OS to your hard drive. I am showing you how to do it using Linux Mint. Visit Linux Mint website and download ISO. Burn it to a disc and boot up your computer using that bootable disc. Go to Menu>Accessories>Terminal. Type sudo apt-get update. Press Enter. Type sudo apt-get install chntpw. Press Enter and keep that terminal open. From desktop go to Computer and then just open the drive where Windows is loaded. It will mount that drive. In the terminal type cat /proc/mounts. Hit Enter. It will give output like /dev/sda1 /media/CA123DD456EA6512. This long serial no will vary in your case. Change it accordingly in next command. Type cd /media/ CA123DD456EA6512. Hit Enter. Type cd Windows/System32/config/ and Press Enter. Type sudo chntpw SAM and Press Enter. You will get a menu with all users of the system. Default is Administrator. Type 1 and press Enter to clear user password. If you need to reset password for a specific user, type sudo chntpw -u username SAM and follow previous instructions. Close everything and reboot system.

I was going to suggest the chntpw. As far as I know that's compatible up to Windows 8.1... Never had to use it on Win10 yet.

@Breffni-Potter said in Windows 10 Anniversary Edition May Delete Partitions!:

Apple trash Windows and Linux installs on OSx frequently,

I have high-lighted the bit you quoted in bold. How is this a problem exclusive to Windows if OSX can and has broken installs as well?

Also I'm sure Linux installs can break the Windows partition as well, through carelessness or a bad bit of software installed, you can break that storage. We don't know how or why this happened exactly with Windows 10 but I'm willing to bet some kind of cleanup script was run at the end of the install which for reasons unknown, decided to terminate this partition. We don't know why but it's rubbish to say Windows is the only OS in history to have done this in the specific scenario of having more than 1 OS installed on the same storage.

      @scottalanmiller said

That the most common use case that Windows fails during is caused by dual booting intention doesn't change the fact that the issue is not exclusive to dual booting scenarios.

Where are they saying that on the article though?

Where did I say that Windows was the only OS in history to misbehave and kill storage? And I don't see how OSX being less than ready for prime time (something very evident to me from having tried to use it) excuses Windows from being stable?

I understand, Linux is great and everything else is crap. Linux definitely tends to take data integrity much more seriously than Windows. But why does this need to be about who is better or worse? This is about Windows having a data integrity issue right now that people need to look out for and be aware of and they should not be mislead to think that it is anything except a Windows data integrity issue - it is not reliably handling its own partition table.

The XX concurent users only comes into play if the licensed application offers such a thing. In the case of something like Office 2013, you'd definitely need 300 license...

But for Something like... Raiser's Edge, or a Student Information System... You'd only need to license for the expected number of concurrent users.

IE: Raiser's Edge can be installed on every computer on my campus... But only 15 of us can log in at one time.
