I like Plex. It works really well, and has a Mobile devices as well, so you can watch your home movie collection on the go.

I used TVmobili a long time ago, but after I found Plex, I never looked back.

I keep meaning to look into this also. I cut the cord over a decade ago, but always just hooked the laptop up to the TV.

I really want a better solution. I have the space. I have the know how. I lack a firm enough desire to get it done 🙂

What media are you watching on your computer/tv combo?

              .mkv and .mp4 files generally.

Obviously we have Netflix. We also have a Crunchyroll subscription, as well as a Slingbox setup in Japan.

Those 3 things reduce our locally stored file watching to a minimum, hence the low desire to actually change something.

LOL - I meant to ask, where are you getting your .mkv and .mp4 files?

                What is Crunchyroll?
The slingbox is in Japan so you can stream Japanese TV back to the states?

Netflix of the subtitled Japanese TV world. It started with Anime, but they are bringing more dramas on board. Makes it much better to watch TV shows actually WITH my wife.

Yes. We have a HD receiver with built in DVR setup and my in-laws house. We just catch over the air channels.

A friend sent me this article about Netflix "tricks"... one of which is to fool the service into thinking you are located in a different country... I know what I'll be testing this weekend...

You do realize that there are many channels broadcast over the air?

I setup an OpenVPN connection on the iPhones and iPad to connect back to our house for when the family is out of the country.

Good plan, for sure, but I think the point of fooling netflix is to get the selections from other countries not available in your home country.

True, but for my 5 and 7 yo children as long as they can watch US Netflix shows from Japan which does not have ANY Netflix access yet, then it is good enough.
