We use "the library" as a tongue in cheek reference to the toilet. Is "Cave of Undead PCs" by extension a reference to the same thing? If so.... why?

lol, nope. I have an actual library on campus. Some of the PC's are fairly crap though as they are nearing the end of their 4 year warranty but there are a few tops ones..

4 years old and you're calling them crap? What's wrong with them? I suppose if they were bottom of the barrel 4 years ago.. maybe, but if they were and i3 or i5 they should be totally fine for surfing the web today.

Yes, that is true. They are indeed good for surfing the web still. However they have 5400 rpm drives in them. So loading office and any other programs on them take a while.

Sure, but putting SSDs in them will solve that problem and cost a fraction of a new machine.

Last summer I replaced my office machines that were 7 years old. I figured at that age they weren't worth installing SSDs in them as other hardware failures would make it cost ineffective. That coupled with an OS upgrade (need to purchase a license) made the new machines a better option. I'll probably look to replace all the spinning rust in 2 years so the second half of their lives seem more like the first half.

This is true, an SSD would be very beneficial. We have done that to a few PC's and a few laptops.
I will suggest this to my boss as our replacement budget is currently listing to starboard.
                                            Thanks šŸ™‚
