In a bit of admitted frustration - I am re-thinking running a pi-hole.. hosted or not. this is a tab bit of frustration I am not really all that interested in.

That being said, I am up for trying to isolate and resolve this issue.

Right now, the Admin Dashboard is timing out. Starting sometime yesterday, it seems that the system is being hammered, but I have yet to ascertain to what end. The Dashboard is reporting over 700 clients - which I don't think it should unless it's being access / used / hit by something that is over loading it.

This time - the page finally loaded:
      5ad51e8b-4aa0-48ed-a4dc-c543bf00842b-image.png

The total lack of information between 04:30 and 11:00 (ish) is due to the system being turned completely off. I can't see that a single house, and the average number of devices should be hitting the 10,000 mark on queries.

And of course there is this:

This seems - seriously abnormal and my first gut thought is to block peacecorps.gov -

And this happens quite often right now -

      System running:

      Any thoughts?

Where are you hosting this? What measures have you taken to restrict access?

Look under Tools > Network. Chances are you'll see a bunch of IP addresses that don't belong to you, which would indicate that others are accessing your pi-hole.

There are 702 entries, there should only be 2

Recommended solution is to use a VPN -- https://docs.pi-hole.net/guides/vpn/overview/

Can you verify fail2ban is working. The service might have stopped.

fail2ban doesn't do anything, at all, in this case. fail2ban is a tool for restricting IPs based on failed login attempts. There is no login situation here, so fail2ban doesn't have any way to come into place.

It's like asking how you keep people from walking across your grass and mentioning that you have a secret password on your laptop. Huh?

There's no possibility of it doing anything. There's nothing here for it to block.

@gjacobse I think using a free Cloudflare plan might help, if I understand the situation. I don't own a RP so just guessing. Cloudflare will block a lot of bad traffic.

Set one up along with your new network gear. It is well worth it. Amazes me at how much crap gets blocked.

It's nothing to do with Pi-Hole, it's just not something that fail2ban is involved in.

I use it on Vultr and have not had issues. But I'll move to just at home once we relocate. Don't want to be doing DNS calls back to the US when we don't need to.

@black3dynamite I use it at home and have zero complaints. My wife gets frustrated when she goes somewhere else and notices all the ads/crap that load.

My wife complained that it broke one of her games- which - honest I didn’t care about,...

Could I run this at home- IN home? I could. And if it’s a case of that’s a better option. I might just move to that.

The small instance running isn’t bad- running more hardware here isn’t the beat option as I don’t have any more hardware to run.
