Fedora Cinnamon, Fedora Deepin, Ubuntu, Elementary O/S etc?

What's the preferred choice these days?

This question is asking from a "user" reference point (NOT an IT or Admin reference), therefore, candy appeal is very important!!

I doubt you'll find a single answer for this. Despite my enjoyment of Fedora, I'd add Pop_OS to that list. When my parents (eventually) purchase a new computer, it's going to be a System76 laptop with Pop_OS.

I was looking for a distro for the kids to use for their school work.

Ubuntu Desktop was suggested and it has worked perfectly. It's easy to use, nice to look at and stable. Easy to support too.

Mostly for end users I recommend stock Ubuntu.

My preference is straight Ubuntu current releases (non LTS) for workstation use.

Pop_OS is pretty, among others, but they lack some out-of-the-box technical and security features and abilities I don't want to deal with.

When I do want to deal with learning and manual setup and configuration, then I prefer Arch.

I loathe this question (it's not you) because everyone asks it and it really doesn't matter. They spend so much energy worrying about the distro that they miss the Linux experience of customization because they are so focused on a particular flavor.

Honestly, it doesn't matter. I would use Ubuntu which is easy enough to use for anyone and is well supported. To me gnome looks really nice by default on Ubuntu, and is your best community supported workstation distro by far.

Manjaro (based on Arch) has been great. I have yet to look for software to install that isn't available either via the standard repos or AUR.

I'll concede that I've had to get into the cli a couple of times for minor package manager bugs, but that's a minor issue for me. (OP asked preferred, not best for newbs)

The main selling points for me have been:

                        • Excellent hardware support within it's own ecosystem / environment
                        • semi-bleeding edge
                        • rolling-release (install once, update forever)
                        • good use / setup / integration for the Cinnamon DE

Personally, I prefer the Cinnamon desktop experience. You can get that on both Ubuntu and Fedora.

Yeah I like the no desktop icon feel. Although I decided to keep the dock after 20.04 for some reason, but I did previously remove it

After giving Pop_OS a spin last month, I got to where I actually don't dislike Gnome anymore. I do like Cinnamon and KDE as well.

I keep my most frequently used apps on the dock.

yeah when I initially switched to GNOME 3 when it first came out I was a big fan of no desktop icons. I haven't had any for a long time. I also keep a dock, but on the bottom. I'm basic.

Getting ready to throw Mint Cinnamon onto a laptop although Pop OS seems to be the new belle of the ball nowadays.

There's a big difference, visually between Cinnamon and GNOME3 desktop environment.
