Speaking of open source going SaaS...

Someone brought up Buttercup a few months ago, and I just listened to a podcast on it, I thought I'd give it it's own thread.

      https://buttercup.pw/

Ultimately the project owners want to turn it into a company like LastPass, generating their revenue from SaaS, but they are starting out as an open source project.

Here's the podcast I listened to.
      https://changelog.com/podcast/325

It was pretty interesting as a non developer to hear them talk about their decision making processes on different platforms for making this project - i.e. they used Electron for cross platform compatibility, but they really don't like it. It's bloated and not as performant as native apps. I didn't quite follow if Electron worked for mobile apps or not either, though they definitely are having a more challenging time getting things working on mobile than they were on Windows.

It will be interesting to see how this project continues.

Open Source project paid amazon for their SSL cert. . .

        It does look interesting though.

This is what Bitwarden does too. They are open source but have their free SaaS and their paid enterprise features.

I used it for a while, I gave up because it lacked some integration that LP had.. no clue if that's been resolved now or not.

LP is now $36/y... I'm considering looking at other options again.

This is a horribly unworkable solution for mass adoption. It works for knowledgeable people only.

Same, but I also agree with @JaredBusch's assessment that it only works for people who understand the process.

I can autofill on everything with Android. Last I used iOS it was fine also.
