      2 Dell R520's with Perc 710 Mini - both RAID 10 (8X600GB)

      Failed disk 0:1 on server 2 - Dell enterprise 3.5" 600GB 15 SAS drive

      I have a spare Dell enterprise 2.5" 600GB 15K SAS drive (in a 2.5" to 3.5" caddy) that was for server 1.

Can I use this 2.5" drive as a replacement for my current 3.5" failed drive as the 3.5" won't arrive till tomorrow?

I assume yes but not 100% sure. Wondering if anyone else has been here, done this.

Your replacement drive arrive tomorrow. Why put the system through the added stress of a resilver operation today, just to fail it and do it again tomorrow?

That is my initial thought and why I have sat here contemplating for the last 2 hours since the failed hard drive's discovery.

It's the worry that another drive will die prior to receiving the new drive.

You are far more likely to cause another drive to fail by adding the stress of a resilver to the normal workload.

Also, you have tested backups right? That is the point of them after all. Disaster Recovery.

That makes a lot of sense to me. Less stress on the systems is much less stress on me!

In addition, I am an "odds" kinda guy, so if odds are in favor of waiting, then so be it.

Today is the day you verify your backups (not on to your failed array obviously) and make sure things run correctly tonight. Because tomorrow is when you start the resilver of the array and the most likely chance for a failure.

Yes I do (last nights backup). Just backed up as many of the VM's as I could without causing issues during production.

We use Veeam with Vmware 6.5.

But to the actual original question, yes you can shove any media you want in there, the RAID controller should handle it. It just needs to be the same speed or faster as well as the same size or larger.

Right, but I was assuming that you wanted your system running as it was.

Well, Dell stated it was going to be overnight but the drive just showed up about 5 minutes ago. They also mentioned that it was going to be a 3.5" drive. It turns out they sent me a 2.5" UGH.'

Best guess, the 3.5's are no longer out there. It is pretty old after all. I'm guessing I should get confirmation from Dell that these are same logically (don't know the right word) vs physically.

Those drives are 100% out there. Dell screwed the pooch.

I would get something in writing that Dell intended for you to use this drive or not use it.

Received confirmation from Dell support rep that they only stock 2.5" drives in this size, there are no reported issues with this type of replacement and all should be well.

Well, we are going to find out later tonight when users log out.

We have used 2.5" from dell to replace a 3.5" in a failed raid many times with no issues. Like @JaredBusch said, though, double check that backup first, even though the drive came early, it's premature to drop it in.....

Good to know, Thanks for the info.

Been checking the backups, plus the backups I've been doing throughout the day.

Big issue is the one server is constantly in use. Will backup when everyone is off, check it, then replace the drive tonight.

I've also done it. But not on anything under warranty support. I've no issues with the technical functionality. But when it is warranty, then I want it done to not lose said warranty.

                                            Just an update.

As was hoping, replacement of 3.5" with 2.5" SAS went fine and now a few weeks later another HD is in Predictive Failure (Same RAID 10 Group).

Tomorrow morning the server will be rebooted to set the disk offline and then replaced with another 2.5" drive from Dell.

Just wondering if others experience the same multiple failed/predictive failure issues in a relatively short amount of time?

My view, as this is the second time this has happened on different servers, yes this can happen often as drives are of the same age so it can be expected.

Kinda like your driver side headlight goes out so you know the passenger has a high probability of going out soon also.
