      Jaguar attacks selfie-taker

A woman who stepped over a barrier to take a selfie at a zoo in Arizona, US, has been attacked by a jaguar.

It happened on Saturday and the woman's injuries were not life-threatening.

When she crossed the barrier and approached the enclosure to photograph herself with the jaguar, it swiped out through the fencing, leaving deep gashes on her arms.

Wildlife World Zoo director Mickey Ollson said there was "no way to fix people crossing barriers".

"They're there for a good reason," he said.

He said the same animal had previously attacked someone else who crossed the barrier, but not as seriously. He confirmed that Saturday's incident was the result of "human error" and the animal would not be euthanised.

I love Catan, but have never bought it. I need to do that.

Same here, it is pretty fun. I might have a digital copy somewhere.

I have a digital version on my iPad. I also have the card game version.

A buddy had the full game.

Meh, I have multiple versions of Catan. It's ok, it plays well enough... but honestly we're kind of in this board game renaissance there are so many better options to spend time playing that I have a hard time dragging Catan out.

It's so popular still that getting the base game, all expansions, plus the 6 player upgrade is crazy expensive. It's a good game, but stick with base+cities and knights imo.

It's the gateway game. It's one of the first games people are introduced to, and a lot of people just stop there.

Dealmaster: Nintendo discounts a bunch of Mario games for “MAR10 Day”

$20 off sale runs through this week, includes another Switch console bundle.

Nintendo has declared this date “Mario Day” for the past few years (March 10 = Mar10 = Mario), but today the company is once again paying homage to its most famous character by launching a number of discounts on games featuring the little guy.

Breakthrough, the rare science documentary that feels like a miracle

"It's astonishing how few documentaries are about gifted scientists"—here's one for sure.

"It's astonishing how few documentaries there are about gifted scientists," filmmaker Bill Haney tells Ars about Breakthrough, his new documentary premiering over the weekend at South by Southwest. "Part of it is most filmmakers don’t know much about science, they’re thinking about film. But science can be complex, and audiences can be overwhelmed by scientific subjects. If you’re not careful, you can make NOVA, which hits your head not your heart."

Another 737 MAX jet crash prompts groundings by China, Indonesia, Ethiopia

Similar symptoms to Lion Air crash in November raise concerns over automated safety system.

On March 10, Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crashed shortly after takeoff from Addis Ababa, killing all 189 people aboard. The behavior of the aircraft—a Boeing 737 MAX 8 airliner—was eerily similar to that of Lion Air Flight 610, which crashed on October 29, 2018.

Elon Musk’s late-night announcement to raise prices and reopen some stores

Collapsing sales and more senior staff departures suggest a company in disarray.

In the early hours of Monday morning, Tesla employees got a surprising email from CEO Elon Musk. Less than two weeks after announcing that he was closing the company's retail stores and letting go the sales staff, it was time for an about-turn. According to CNBC, which received a copy of the email, Musk wrote that the company would now be keeping many of its unclosed stores open and would even reopen some of the now-shuttered locations. Additionally, a week from now, there will be price increases on all of its vehicles with the exception of the standard range Model 3. The email to employees was also followed by a public-facing blog post.

Sprint steps up fight against AT&T’s “fake 5G” with full-page Sunday NYT ad

Sprint's open letter repeated its own misleading claim that it needs to merge with T-Mobile in order to deliver a robust nationwide 5G network. Still, Sprint said it plans to offer "real mobile 5G in nine major metro areas" by this summer, regardless of whether the merger is approved.

A small-molecule drug can block a broad range of flu viruses in mice

Rare antibodies help us design a drug that could help after we've caught the flu.

Our bodies are good at generating extremely specific antibodies, targeting a single pathogen among a dizzying mix of harmless bacteria and the proteins made by our own cells. But in some cases, like the flu virus, that specificity is limiting. Those antibodies will generally pick out a very specific strain of the flu virus, leaving us vulnerable to other strains and the new variants that evolve each season.

Three men cop to $21 million vishing and smishing scheme

Phone-based scam may be low-tech, but it netted big bucks, prosecutors say.

The "vishing" and "smishing" scams are variations of phishing that use voicemails and SMS messages instead of email, federal prosecutors in Atlanta, Georgia, said on Friday. From 2011 to 2014, the three Romanians compromised computers located in the US and installed interactive voice response and bulk emailing software on them. The hacked computers initiated thousands of phone calls and text messages that tricked recipients into disclosing personal information, including account numbers, PINs, and social security numbers.

New White House budget spells trouble for NASA’s SLS rocket

By launching a Europa mission on a private rocket, NASA would save $700 million.

With a Republican White House and a Democratic House of Representatives, it almost goes without saying that the President's fiscal year 2020 budget request won't get far within Congress. Yet with NASA's budget, there are intriguing hints about the increasingly commercial nature of lunar exploration.
