      @scottalanmiller that doesn't matter.

It is what was listed so is a reasonable assumption that anything Fedora <current> isnt tested on this board.

Right, that's what I am saying. It is reasonable to assume that SuperMicro isn't testing their boards like we expect that they should. Hence the problem.

We expect vendors to keep testing their hardware against all new versions of relevant, supported OSes during the life of the product.

So either send it to the Fedora team to see if anyone there wishes to troubleshoot, or look at a different distro.

the issue here is that SM has clearly stopped testing completely. For about three years, no testing. Look at the matrix, all kinds of things are missing.

If we go by this chart, and assume that nothing past this chart works, what OS do you expect to use? Here is a quick list of what is listed but NOT current on the testing list...

CentOS / RHEL, Fedora, Windows 10, Suse Linux, Ubuntu, Oracle Linux, FreeBSD...

In fact, except for Solaris, there is no testing of any current OS whatsoever.

CentOS 7 apparently worked. Somewhere up above he reported it as installing without issue.

I don't understand WTF Supermicro has to do with this. It's a Fedora problem, not a Supermicro problem. RHEL 7.5 installed fine, so case closed.

That said, I think the problem is related to UEFI boot or settings for the hard drives in bios or something around that. Or the flash drive if it's run from USB. Starting switch root is when the real root filesystem is mounted during the boot process. I'd also let it sit there for at least 15 minutes to make sure it really is stuck and doesn't spit out an error message.

And I'd also wipe the disk you're trying to install to, so it doesn't have any hidden partitions or disk signatures that tricks the installation program.

Will try the install with another disk, I'll be sure to Secure Erase before use.

SM is in the process of testing with F29.
They will let me know tomorrow, no guarantees!

@FATeknollogee just out of curiosity, does ubuntu 18.10 or 18.04 boot and install successfully?

Not surprised, I bet that there is a relatively universal update that is affecting everything.

CentOS and RHEL works because they are using 3.10.x with backports while Fedora and Ubuntu are using 4.x.

Not likely something IN the kernel, but either a setting or something added. That's my guess.

If possible I think @FATeknollogee should load default bios settings, then set bios boot settings to legacy (not UEFI or dual) and reinstall on a clean drive. This will give you an old skool MBR and bypass a bunch of potential UEFI problems.

@FATeknollogee Typically, I find a corrupted download borked the installer if it hangs at any point in the boot process when installing.

What it's doing right then specifically, I'm not sure. I could take a couple educated guesses, but they'd just be guesses.

                                    I tried F29 and F28 iso's...same problem.
Maybe I should try burning the iso with Rufus instead of Fedora Media Writer?

I just did a fresh install of Fedora 29. I downloaded the Fedora Workstation 29 NET installer, and burned it with Fedora Media Writer on Fedora 28. During installation, I selected the Cinnamon desktop instead of default. It went well. I notice a nice difference between that and 28.

Email received this afternoon from SM:

We have tested Fedora 29 on this MB and found it has video display issue with this MB.

Then we tested Fedora 23 on this MB and it works fine.

It seems the new Fedora OS’s kernel has issue with this MB.

That's interesting. I had to put some boot options on the installer when I tried Fedora on another Supermicro server as well. Also on an old HP server for that matter. Can't remember what it was though or where it goes. Nomodeset maybe.

Anyway, not the problem I though it was.

Do you need graphics output at all anymore in servers? Can you solely use IPMI, or does that require a graphics card/chip?

Fedora Server by default has a console only login.

So unless a desktop is being deployed for some particular reason the issue is a compatibility issue with the drivers and not one that should be overlooked.
