Since the "What are you watching" thread has been derailed into a Star Wars discussion I figured I would fork it. What are y'all's thoughts on the movies post Episode III.

      • Episode VII

      • Rogue One

      • Episode VIII

      • Solo

I tried watching Last Jedi again since it is on Netflix (already), just to see if I was too judgmental of it in the theater. I was able to suspend my dislike for some of the character building (or lack thereof), and the violations of establish Star Wars universe rules (jumping a ship into hyperspace allows you to destroy other ships?). However, I couldn't hold it together on the line, "It's a battering ram cannon!"

The newfound obsession with HYPERFUEL, which for the last 40 years wasn't mentioned once, and is now the central plot point in the last two movies released.
An 18 hour slow speed space chase, during which time the heroine travels across the galaxy, finds Luke after nobody could for 30 years, trains with him, and flies back to the hidden base whose location she shouldn't have even known about, all in 18 hours. Oh, and the Resistance is now only like 6 people, and they have no ships, nothing.
And cgi horsecamel hybrids trampling through a casino, because.

All of the movies suck. Nothing good about em, and they are all plainly obvious where the story is headed / going to end.

Rogue One was obvious since it ends right before Ep IV starts, but it was the most coherent story of any of them with the best characters imo.

I'm not a fan of the new movies. VII was a rehash of EP IV, really? another trench run? another deathstar?

That whole sucking the light out of a star, yet somehow the star reignites (lights back up)?

Hyperspace through shields? (falcon had to leave hyperspace super close to the planet and not crash)
This part speaks to Kelly's question - hyperspace into ships destroys them? Only thing I can think here is the idea is that they aren't fully in hyperspace yet, just going super fast, so that 'could' make sense.

While I didn't like Luke's (OK really the writer's/director's vision) disregard for the Jedi, etc - but I can accept it, not where I wanted it to go - but fine, it's a new direction.

I really did like the new force powers we saw - Luke projecting himself across the galaxy for example.

OK that more or less handles the new trilogy.

Rogue One for me is tied for best movie compared to ESB. It felt like it belonged in that universe. it fills in the gaps - why shooting a small port on the surface actually cased the DS to explode - Great explanation! I also loved all the easter eggs. It felt grand and definitely part of the SW universe. My main complaint - the horrible 3d job on Leia's face at the end. Luckily I didn't get that at all from Tarkin's face earlier in the movie.

Onto Solo - as a space robbery movie - it was fine, fun even - as a SW movie - meh. It filled in some gaps just like RO did, but for the most part I didn't care. There also seemed to be a preachy part in it with the whole pansexual thing ( and EP VIII had a preachy about corporations thing with the casino/arms sales).
In the end I didn't care about any character except Lando - that actor did a fantastic job. I guess I would like to see a continuation of the Maul storyline, but that seems unlikely.

I think Solo bombed mainly because The Last Jedi offended so many people. People just hated the direction TLJ went, so they showed that displeasure by not seeing Solo. The sucky thing about that is that Solo was basically an OK movie, not great like Rogue One (to me at least) but definitely deserved better in the boxoffice. And now, because of the wreck that was TLJ caused Solo to tank - now we won't see any more outside the box movies for a while.

I think this is pretty fair. The one thing I'd add is that regardless of anything, Star Wars fans are probably the hardest group of fans to please

What is frustrating for me as a long time Star Wars fan is that any criticism of the new movies is painted as based in some kind of bias. The things I hear across the net is that the people who didn't like TLJ or TFA didn't because the main characters were not white males. I'm sure there are some who hate Rei because she is a she, but I dislike her character because there is no story behind her. She is a caricature. I feel like they are actually doing harm to any social justice/representation cause they're trying to promote by not making her more than a cardboard cut out of a character.

@kelly TLJ didn't do Rey any favors either in that regard. Would've rather seen Kylo go Light and Rey go Dark or something more interesting. She's like a token good person

Maybe, but I don't hear much grousing about Rogue One. Most people really liked it. TFA and TLJ are just terrible, especially in light of the years of content created by the novels and comics that Disney trashed.

If we blow up another imperial battlestation, I am going to fucking lose it! So sick of that plot

What would pre-date the deathstar--a mobile planet destroyer? A stationary planet destroyer. Great idea!!!!!

I know let's start out with an unlikely hero on a sand planet, and then have that hero be involved with the most impossible task of destroying a death star or something like it.

I'm not sure what you're getting at.

What I would've liked to have seen is for Ep VII and beyond be about the next generations after Han, Leia, Luke, etc. had all died. Leave the old actors out of it entirely, and embark on some new stories.

Maybe, but I don't hear much grousing about Rogue One. Most people really liked it. TFA and TLJ are just terrible, especially in light of the years of content created by the novels and comics that Disney trashed.

That's because Rogue One wasn't based on a main character from the original films

I'm saying if Rogue one were about Han Solo or Leia I really think people would've been a lot more critical. There is definitely bias even though you have a valid point about the story elements and plot. Not every star wars fan understands good writing.

That's part of the reason the Solo movie was so harshly received. Even Jason admits that he probably would've enjoyed it had it not been Han Solo or Star Wars

While I've heard this a tiny bit - and I mean tiny - and really only in relation to all the female roles, not the lack of white male roles. Otherwise, most criticism I hear is how they diverged from the books they were, or how hollow some characters are - or how impossible/dumb somethings are (you can take a shuttle to the casino planet, but you can't take huge portions of the crew with you and just rinse and repeat?).

Rouge One was the only decent one...

If we blow up another imperial battlestation, I am going to fucking lose it! So sick of that plot

yep - if you are going to trash all the EU, then just jump 1000 years into the future and start there. Start fresh - and don't have a bloody Deathstar mobile or immobile in it.

I know let's start out with an unlikely hero on a sand planet, and then have that hero be involved with the most impossible task of destroying a death star or something like it.

Right, its the same plot over and over, the entire plot of every story is the same thing over and over.

Gotta blow up the big guys ship.
