You can use Veeam Endpoint, but it does require a license to backup to ODfB. That is more of a premium feature. Otherwise, you're tied to some type of local storage, whether on your network or to your PC.

Haven't tried it, but I suppose you could script a sort of backup to that location.

Sure, map it to the local folder that is being synced with ODfB. I'll have to try that real quick.

Scratch this idea, unless you do a file-level backup. The only problem with file-level recovery is that you will not be able to recover the laptop if something was to happen. You will only have the files and not the OS. But, if you're just backing up the files, then you might as well take out Veeam Agent altogether and put the files on ODfB as is. Plus, Veeam Agent barks at the idea of backing up the system to its own drive, even though it is synced off-disk.

Who needs to back up a whole laptop? That seems silly.

Protects against ransomware and loss of data if the laptop is lost/stolen from a road warrior. Granted, you are probably going to say that the documents should be stored in the server and backed up from there, but users don't always think in protecting company data. And getting them to is more of a management task than it is a SysAdmin task.

How? The laptop itself is worthless data. Just install the OS again.

It should be, but often times, users will store valuable data on the laptop when they should be storing it on more preferred storage. Then, something happens and they expect IT to work miracles, such as reading the platters or something because they heard that it could be done.

I've witnessed many times of data being stored directly on the C:\ or in C:\Users\Public

Then best tht they lose it. At some point, intentionally throwing away data should not be accomodated.

I don't back up client systems except for my own. My users' documents folder is redirected to a file server share where it is shadow copied 3 times a day and also backed up with Veeam every night.

Everyone is told repeatedly, by me, if it is important to the company, it goes in their documents folder or another shared folder on the server.

But you can't use Veeam free for that. You stated just wrote a script for it. I'm saying don't writr a script and use something that scales and provides central management for free.

But scaling and stuff doesn't matter if it doesn't do the job, right?

The goal is to use ODfB as the target.

But you can't use Veeam free for that. You stated just wrote a script for it. I'm saying don't writr a script and use something that scales and provides central management for free.

But scaling and stuff doesn't matter if it doesn't do the job, right?

The issue at hand is the free Veeam agent can't target ODfB, you have to purchase a license.

You stated something along the lines of write a script so one could use ODfB as a target.

I'm saying that's a bad idea, it means custom scripts for multiple systems, no central management or any other major benefit, besides there being a backup.

Using UrBackup you'd have central management, remote restore functionality, remote backup run, scheduled backups etc.

@nerdydad said in Is someone using OneDrive for Business 1TB space to backup data/system?:

You can use Veeam Endpoint, but it does require a license to backup to ODfB. That is more of a premium feature. Otherwise, you're tied to some type of local storage, whether on your network or to your PC.

I was just giving an example of free software like Veeam, if it requires license, I will look for other free or cheaper option.

I'm okay with backing up of only data, but would like to utilize ODfB space, to make secondary backup. Is it going to be like an alternative for cloud backup?

Is ODfB really 1TB for each user?
