Hello,
I need to download this file:
File Name: AIR-AP1830-K9-ME-8-3-122-0.zip
from
more details:
Cisco 1830 Series Mobility Express Release 8.3 Software. Access Point image bundle, to be used for software update and/or supported access points images. Login & Valid Contract Required
AIR-AP1830-K9-ME-8-3-122-0.zip 05-AUG-2017 157.64 MBCan you download it for me and afterwards I can point you to link for uploading, I know this sounds shady but you will be doing me solid, and its lame for cisco to tie you up with contract for downloading updates.
Coon and Friends needs your help

One of the many reasons that I avoid Cisco gear. Nothing exactly wrong with charging for updates, but it means that you never really own the device, but you pay for it as if you own it. If you don't maintain your Cisco support contracts, your devices might as well be worthless since you can't patch them.
-
As I have learned, the fact you have to have a SmartNET agreement to get software updates is part of the "cost" of Cisco.
-
This same reasoning now makes HPE servers a no go. You don't get patches from HPE unless under a valid/current support contract.

While I love some cheaper ODMs, just because they don’t charge for firmware patches Also doesn’t mean 6 months in they refuse to support a new OS. Your opinion is valid if you never update, but it’s nonsense if you hope to update.

I definitely get your point. It's costly for a vendor to support equipment beyond the the initial release. But MS has now done exactly this - they release new version of Windows 10 1+ times a year with no required payments in site short of changing editions.

The software only license of Smartnet is usually reasonable(at least for cisco... haha). Have no idea though about this particular device.

Yeah I was thinking the same. My old Pix firewalls (506e) were about $100/yr. This did include hardware warranty as well as software support and software updates. But a 4 year old HPE server is like $600/yr for next-day onsite, etc. If they haven't already, they need to have a very cheap software only agreement if they are going to force this route (which they already have).
At a $600/yr + for support it's basically making it make more sense for a business to buy a new server instead of running it out to 7-10 years.
Considering modern computing.. 7-10 for server is pretty reasonable in a SMB that doesn't have need for more compute power.

$100/yr is more than the cost of entirely replacing it with something modern and better from a vendor that treats you better. Making $100 an insane price for keeping crap gear patched.

Yes, of course - today. Of course, there is little to no phone/instant support (though I think they have or are changing that). Some people are wanting that from the vendor direct, not from JB or others.

Who will all in the firewall space provide 24/7/365 follow the sun support for a firewall/router for $100 a year, as well as patches, feature improvements etc? I wouldn't call that expensive for what it is.

Who needs that, just have a spare. Better protection, fraction of the price, and no arguing with Cisco to try to get support from those idiots. Not trusting Cisco support is another facet of the situation.

It's today that the problem is being tackled.

If you need product support (Question about why something isn't working) if you need a bug fixed, or a workaround for a 3rd parties bug (Cisco gave me the workaround for fixing interop issues caused by bad RSTP implementations by HPE and others etc). Also, same day replacement with labor to do it (If I've got a firewall at a lumber mill in the middle of no where having the staff to deal with that). I can pay someone but that costs money (It's an insurance policy against having to deal with all this stuff or do my own RCA's on obnoxious interop issues of SIP inspection with a broken 3rd party Avaya system etc).

If you need product support (Question about why something isn't working)...
Just buy stuff that works and doesn't constantly need them to figure out why they shipped things that don't work
But honestly, this is one of the benefits of a spare that is tested up front, you can have something working long before Cisco (that I don't trust to fix things promptly) could even look into it.

With good spares and any level of competent receptionist, you can do this without needing a third party. Somehow, somewhere there is a scenario where there isn't a single competent employee within any reasonable distance, but we are into the insane niche here. And those techs sent out are just random on call remote hands, they don't have any specific skills or training. For all you know, it's your own receptionist that they have contracted to do that for you.

Also, same day replacement ....
But my way is cheaper with same hour replacement

We had firewalls on barge/piers and lumbar sites with actually illiterate staff... also in retail cables and poets can be color coded and the stoned teenager there will screw it up. It’s not as far off as you think. Throw in language barriers overseas and it gets more fun.
This is part of the reason for cloud managed configs like Meraki, and Ubiquity. Cold spares have a lot larger config drift problem than people realize.

My point is you don’t always control the 3rd party device you connect to. 1/2 the stuff I called my networking vendor was getting a work around for someone else’s gear (ISP, SIP peer, security vendor switch) misbehaving.

I only ever seen three scenarios of Cisco hardware owners:
-
huge enterprises that that have a lot of money to spend, but don't have the IT staff to make good purchasing decisions.
-
a specific feature or technology is required that only Cisco offers.
-
The largest enterprises who need the largest equipment and biggest support contracts.
