So, big question for me. Is there another product around that will be just as easy to "set it and get monitoring emails" as Crashplan was? I don't know of any off the top of my head.

Me either. I'd be willing to give something else a try, but it'd have to blow Crashplan out of the water for me to switch. Even $10 /month for my backups is worth it to me.

I know there are always places like BackBlaze, but I don't know and aren't quickly finding the limits to the personal account with them.
I'll probably be using B2 to backup the home lab soon, but not really the same wheelhouse with that.

It's a GUI tool, always has been.

@coliver You were not kidding. Truly dummy proof. It's actually too dummy proof. Good for someone that doesn't want to customize the backup as you mentioned with your parents. I'm giving the CloudBerry freeware client a try. It's got an option to backup directly my Backblaze B2 account I just created. It's a better option than the Backblaze client.

@scottalanmiller When I signed up for my Backblaze B2 account, the FAQ's and Quick start guides direct you to the command-line tool. They didn't make it clear that they had their OWN GUI tool. They did make it clear that there is a bunch of 3rd party applications that can backup to them though.

We are talking about Backblaze, not B2. B2 is cloud storage, not a backup system. Backblaze itself is a backup system.

This link clears everything up between Backblaze and Backblaze B2: https://help.backblaze.com/hc/en-us/articles/218483787-What-s-the-difference-between-B2-vs-Backblaze-Online-Backup. As mentioned in the article, B2 doesn't include client software and talks about the command-line option. You will need to choose a application that integrates with B2. I choose Cloudberry and so far I'm happy with my choice. In the end, I'm going to now save money. The only con is reseeding the initial data.

Just re-pinging this to see what people are doing. I have a few friends/family on CrashPlan and am still deciding what to suggest.
I like BB, but we never finished talking about their potentially large delay in backing up new files. Is anyone from BB still on ML? I know aaron left.

I'm interested in getting something for my Mum, as she has large amounts of photos (not in size just in numbers)
Think I wont more of an archive system, as today she might have photos from 2001 - 2017 filling her HD, so if I deleted them, then after the next "backup" ran these would disappear? next time the backup is ran???
So would something like B2 storage be better so I can transfer the 2001-2017 folders to there for keeping freeing up the HD on the laptop.

I'm sticking with Crashplan due to retention and ease of use... Especially for recommending it to other folks... Set it & forget it.

As I have been looking at the competitors, I've noticed CrashPlan has a couple of features that really stand out, mainly the instant backups (not having to wait hours) and unlimited revisions. It's almost worth the extra $5 a month.

Yeah. I've been with crashplan for god... 5 years or better. I've not found anybody that can do it as well as they can.

Yes, this is how backups work.
What you are wanting is storage, not a backup.
