Not sure if this will help since we can't see what sort of error you are getting but...

Office doesn't always uninstall cleanly and may screw up future attempts.

Try using the removal tools here

Then reboot the machine and start up a new installation once things are cleared out.

Just because you have 64 bit OS, doesn't mean you need or want 64 bit office. In fact in most cases you want 32 bit.

With that being said, you may have an old version screwing up the install. Microsoft has a removal tool for old versions that might help:

Is that really true today? What's the advantage to the lower version?

                  Plugins still work.

Is that true across the board? Everything I run tends to be 64bit. I've not run 32bit Office in a long time, what would it be incompatible with?

Microsoft still recommends 32bit for cross app and plugin compatibility reasons. I'm not sure I've encountered a situation where that actually ended up being important though. At least not in the last few years.

Probably goofy internally built nonsense, addons from small developers who don't update often or at all etc. Nothing I've run into has been a problem though. At least not since the 2010 days. Maybe not even then.

My recommendation is to avoid that crap 🙂 Run 64bit Office and weed out the garbage you shouldn't have installed!
