Hyper-V Manager Unable to connect to Hyper-V Host from Remote Workstation
-
Are both machines in the same domain? Has this worked in the past? Does the user you are logged in as have permissions on the Hyper-V host? What is the client os you are using Hyper-V Manager from?
-
- This machine is in a different subdomain which is the child of the domain I am connected to currently
- This is a new install
- Not the local machine
- Windows 7

What OS is the Hyper-V server running?
Is the user you are logged into Windows 7 have the rights to manage the new Hyper-V server?
The Hyper-V server you are attempting to manage, is it a full GUI with Hyper-V role or just a Hyper-V server?

- Hyper-V 2016
- No, I would need to learn how to do that via the CLI/Powershell.
- It's a Hyper-V server. I won't install the role on a Windows Server 2012 server.

net localgroup administrators mydomain.local\user1 /add
correct? -
Can you manage 2016 Hyper-V from Win 7?
-
Is the Hyper-V host joined to a domain?

Yes it is

I don't know if there would be a compatibility problem.

correct? This applied, but did not resolve the issue.

I believe you can't manage Hyper-V Server 2016 from Windows 7. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I think you need Windows 10 to do so. Also, if you trying to connect to the Hyper-V host using the "Connect as user" option in the "Connect to Server dialog box", I also had issues with that, I had to log into the client pc as the same user I was attempting to connect to the Hyper-V server as.

I think @Dashrender is right, you need Win 10 to administer 2012/2016

If youa re trying to use MS tools, you always need compatible versions. MS does all of their tooling around you keeping your management workstations up to date. There are reasons we come down hard on IT machines not being current.

Why are they running a Windows infrastructure if they don't have the most basic Windows tools? This makes no sense.

furthermore - as JB loves to point out - anyone can upgrade from Windows 7 or 8(.1) to Windows 10 for free. So just upgrade.

I had another user using Windows 8.1 in Spiceworks manage Hyperv 2016 and had the same error. I recommended to restart the Hypervisor as he could manage another server in the same version. See post below:
