So Laura and I went to see an apartment this weekend that is much closer to work. It's an extra $400 a month for an apartment that is half the size of our current one. It's to be expected though. The further north you go in NJ the higher the prices. This place bases their leases on market value, whether your windows face the parking lot or trees, current amount of vacancies, etc. I asked them what the cost of living has been historically from the lowest to the highest and they said 10% - 20% per year. Wat? My current place goes up by $50 each year. This place could possibly be $4,000 more next year? It seems like our choices are either affordable unsafe areas or unaffordable safe areas. I've lived in crappy areas before myself but I can't do that with Laura around. Really frustrating situation. I asked her to find places with her ideal pricing and she found 4 places with high crime rates. Ughhhh.

The pure electric have the problem of range, even the Tesla's. How far are they going to get in a normal NE Ohio winter running heat and defrosters all the way?

Agreed. Range is still a big issue. Although they've found that the current range works for 90% of people 95% of the time, I think those were the numbers that one of the California Uni's put out.. It's just that 5% of the time that would be a killer.

California that might even be true. Ohio, Main, Wisconsin, Montana, etc, I have a little doubt about. If I could get an electric that would work for 95% of the time, I might start considering one.

Tesla has a charging unit for your home if you have solar panels. I'm definitely considering that for the home we build since we will have solar panels. Might even be those shingles that Elon Musk is developing. Who knows.

OK I'll disagree with you there.
I get 40 mpg on average in my Prius. My pickup got around 12 (15 on a great day), my wife's CRV gets around 24 - and I've heard about some diesel cars getting upwards of 40 mpg. But most people I know with normal cars get around 25-30 on average. Let's assume I get an average of 10 MPG better than a non hybrid car.
I'm at 95K miles and haven't changed the battery yet, let's assume I have to at 100K.
Hybrid - 100K/40 mpg = 2500 gallons
non - 100K/30 mpg = 3334 gallonsToday's gas in Omaha is $2.20/gal
Hybrid fuel over 100K - $5500
non fuel over 100K - $7335Difference $1835
Cost of a new battery - $2500
In simple math is looks like the hybrid costs more, but we are forgetting that we got to spend that fuel money more slowly, possibly allowing us to earn interest on the savings until the battery was needed. Additionally, fuel is pretty low right now, it's been close to $4/gal during parts of my ownership, so the gap is much closer to zero if not in the hybrid's favor than this example shows.
Now to be fair, I do need to mention that Hybrids are suppose to run with full synthetic oil, more expensive, but my Prius is listed in the manual as change only 10K miles, not 3K like normal cars, so this is probably a wash.
Also hyrbids are suppose to use low resistance tires, which are more expensive - but normal cars could also get better gas milage from these as well, so again -- could be a wash.ultimately, my research has shown that in most cases considering today's fuel prices, it's pretty much a wash. But once fuel gets back to $4/gal or more, the hybrid will spank non-hybrid cars.

So Laura and I went to see an apartment this weekend that is much closer to work. It's an extra $400 a month for an apartment that is half the size of our current one. It's to be expected though. The further north you go in NJ the higher the prices. Agreed. Range is still a big issue. Although they've found that the current range works for 90% of people 95% of the time, I think those were the numbers that one of the California Uni's put out.. It's just that 5% of the time that would be a killer.
California that might even be true. Ohio, Main, Wisconsin, Montana, etc, I have a little doubt about. If I could get an electric that would work for 95% of the time, I might start considering one.
Tesla has a charging unit for your home if you have solar panels. I'm definitely considering that for the home we build since we will have solar panels.
Yeah, and in a place where the power grid has been criminally mismanaged (Enron) like California, those Tesla home battery packs actually make sense.
I don't see how solar panels and a charging station are related. Do they give you a cheap or free charging station if you have solar panels?

Most ICE vehicles are moving to synthetic oil now as well from what I can tell. There are some distinct advantages to it even if it is slightly more expensive.

I'm guessing even with heat and defrosters on you're still getting well over 100 miles per charge. That will handle most people's daily commute. It definitely would both mine and my wife's.

That was the finding. For most rural areas you'd still be in good shape with 100 miles/day... In a lot of cases I'd be cutting it close though but again that's probably the 5% of times I actually drive.. I really like the Chevy Bolt platform and will probably be looking into that next time I am up for a new car.

I'm pretty sure the numbers still end up being less expensive for an all electric car even when you take into account the battery pack change when compared to similar gas cars with a normal maintenance schedule. Hybrids on the other hand are almost always more expensive.
The pure electric have the problem of range, even the Tesla's. How far are they going to get in a normal NE Ohio winter running heat and defrosters all the way?
Agreed. Range is still a big issue. Although they've found that the current range works for 90% of people 95% of the time, I think those were the numbers that one of the California Uni's put out.. It's just that 5% of the time that would be a killer.
California that might even be true. Ohio, Main, Wisconsin, Montana, etc, I have a little doubt about. If I could get an electric that would work for 95% of the time, I might start considering one.
Tesla has a charging unit for your home if you have solar panels. I'm definitely considering that for the home we build since we will have solar panels.
Yeah, and in a place where the power grid has been criminally mismanaged (Enron) like California, those Tesla home battery packs actually make sense.
I don't see how solar panels and a charging station are related. Do they give you a cheap or free charging station if you have solar panels?
I swear I remember reading that the solar paneling is required for the home charging station but if it isnt it would still cost you an arm and a leg.
I know it isn't required for Chevy's home charging (they do require a 230v circuit though). I'm not sure about Telsa's.

So Laura and I went to see an apartment this weekend that is much closer to work. It's an extra $400 a month for an apartment that is half the size of our current one. It's to be expected though. The further north you go in NJ the higher the prices. This place bases their leases on market value, whether your windows face the parking lot or trees, current amount of vacancies, etc. I asked them what the cost of living has been historically from the lowest to the highest and they said 10% - 20% per year. Wat? My current place goes up by $50 each year. This place could possibly be $4,000 more next year? It seems like our choices are either affordable unsafe areas or unaffordable safe areas. I've lived in crappy areas before myself but I can't do that with Laura around. Really frustrating situation. I asked her to find places with her ideal pricing and she found 4 places with high crime rates. Ughhhh.
If you are happy where you are at, don't move. The commute sucks, but being safe and having affordable housing sucks less.

Wtf? How is that possible? Sounds like you need to invest in a new car. I have a 2014 Forester I put 60 miles on a day... I still don't hit 400$ every month even when gas is included. Sounds like you need to start changing your own oil.
I put 70-100 miles on it a day
I have an Aveo right now (they're known to be s***), driving it ~70 miles a day, and I don't put $400 a month into the thing, gas and maintenance included!
It's $400 every 1.5 months for maintenance. Part of the fees being higher is because i have a hybrid.
Oh, so you really don't like keeping money in your pocket. Have you had to replace the battery pack yet?
No I think I hit that at 60k or something. I need to check my manual.
That's going to be a big bill.... it's why I just don't consider electric or hybrid ready yet.
