I, too, was thinking about doing this for the home in Texas.

I want to do this at our house, but the cash is not available at the moment.

I'm looking to do this at home. Just having started on it yet.

The UBNT line is pretty strong for both the APs and cameras. Don't forget to put a UPS on the PoE and such.

UPS All the things. Here is my cable modem and ERL in the living room coat closet.

Need to get a Pi and setup power monitoring.

I've been thinking about it for home too. I have a little Intel Atom D525 that will run Ubuntu, so maybe I can put the NVR package on that and test it out. That box doesn't support virtualization and I was just about to toss it, but this may give it new life.

Is it possible I found a good reason not to virutalize a server? 😉

No, you made the decision to not virtualize already and are attempting reverse justification.

@scottalanmiller If ESXi won't go on there, is it possible that Xen will? I have never used Xen, so this might be time to try it.

POssible, yes. Xen does not require hardware support for full PV.

KVM might as well. I've found Xen supports a much larger hardware base then VMWare does.

I've been asked to put together a video surveillance system for a small private (and non profit) school. Any reason not to go with a UBNT NVR, UBNT ToughSwitch PoE, and as many cameras as I need?

As of right now, just know that if they need a specialty camera that UBNT doesnt make (like a PTZ one) you will have to switch the NVR software, UBNT-NVR software does not support 3rd party cameras.

We have this exact setup at my office, works awesome. If the cameras are indoors, remove the plastic domes for best picture.
