So a client received a letter today asking them to declare their software license compliance by going to www.bsa.country/uk/declaration and entering their BSA ID.

The letter states its not mandatory but failure to manage software assets and misplaced confidence by management can result in legal, financial and other consequences.

Is this a hoax or is this something the client should do? Has anyone seen this before?

And please note: We dont have any illegal software running as far as I know so should be good to do it but have never seen before so wasnt sure whether to ignore or comply.

I'm no lawyer, but that SOUNDS like a hoax. The BSA is real, self reporting is fine, but not doing it resulting in legal consequences... um, that's not okay language. That sounds like a scare tactic or extortion. Check the links, I bet that that isn't real BSA.

BSA.country goes to a live site. More than that, no idea.

@Joel you have to wait until the 100% changes to the jpg/png/whatever before clicking submit

My guess is that It's a fake... Whois.net says is registered by "Third Marketing" from Antwerpen, Belgium... Sounds scammy to me.

That means that Imgur is having an issue again.

It's legit. And Third Marketing is BSAs marketing and PR company so the manage their sites.

You can also find links to that campaign site (bsa.country) on bsa.org

They can come to your door with lawyers if they actually think youre 'stealing' imaginary property. But they need permission from a court to do so. And you dont have to do anything for them, at all, ever, without this order. At least in the US that is.

Actually they already have permission when you agree to the EULAs.

That's what gets you. Run any of their products and you've already agreed to bypassing the court needs. Only time that the court is required is if you are not running any BSA covered products - and basically everyone is.
