@gjacobse I was thinking that as well, if it were just the engine I could see this....

But you'd want to have several cars to live in / store supplies on.

So at a minimum 2 cars, average 5 probably.

How about start with 5 full of fuel, then add some to live in, store crap in...

Exactly. Have a few freight cars for long term storage. Some passenger cars for living. The ones with beds and bathrooms and kitchens.

It's only transportation to an island anyway.

Any solution that involves things you can not make yourselves = failure.

But they can take scores. 2-5 cars is nothing for a train.

Yes it can, but you are going to be adding Armour and armaments -- added weight, reduced number of cars

How Long Does It Take a Train to Stop?

Trains can't stop quickly or swerve. The average freight train is about 1 to 1ΒΌ miles in length (90 to 120 rail cars). When it's moving at 55 miles an hour, it can take a mile or more to stop after the locomotive engineer fully applies the emergency brake. An 8-car passenger train moving at 80 miles an hour needs about a mile to stop. How does this compare to other vehicles?

              • A light rail train requires about 600 feet to stopβ€”the length of two football fields.

But we are talking about far lighter than these, at just 8mph. If a light rail can stop from full speed in 600ft, imagine how quickly it stops when it is nearly stopped already.

Not really, it's only about holding out, not living for forever.

Rightly so. Humans have traveled for a lot of years and miles with their feet. IT's the place of 'safety' that posses the biggest risk and problem. that and more humans.

My issue with a train, or anything that isn't squarly anchored away from zombies is a big risk.

Trains are a much smaller risk compared to hoarding up in a building, but still...

Not moving, you're dying.(at least if your on a train)

Depends on how long you need to do it for.

Over a year or two forget land transportation. It's impractical and I think most people here are undervaluing how quickly things degrade when they're not maintained.

Trains for example - don't see any heavy duty diesel mechanics around here πŸ˜›

That's my point, if an IT person can't maintain it (as is the conversation here) we'd have to find someone alive to do it.

Until we were able to get some where far enough away to get out to sea / island without any zombies.

Providing zombies can't swim that's fairly easy here. Rest of you might be screwed 😞

But once you stop moving, if that happens, then you move on to the next plan. Using a train doesn't preclude other options later.

So you might stop literally in the middle of the largest zombie horde. Guess what, you're dead...

I would bet we actually do. @art_of_shred is a mechanic and has learned to work on all kids of engines and mechanical and electrical stuff (learned to band aid with what you have in Africa).

Nope, because zombies can't breach the train. This really isn't that hard. You control FAR more than you are assuming. You control if you move and what direction and how fast. If people try to stop you, you turn around and call zombies. If zombies are there you hit them or wait them out or outrun them... whatever. You have SO much more control that if you are stationary. Because you have ALL the benefits of stationary plus the benefits of the potential for movement PLUS the benefits of being able to seal off different parts of the train and/or leave some behind.

Remember... zombies are dumb and slow and the have no power. If they can't lean in crowds on glass, they can't get in. Trains are designed for this specifically, look at Hong Kong or Tokyo ... zombies try to breach the train every day and fail. They are elevated, a lot. They are sealed. Open windows cannot be reached from the ground by zombies. They are very good at protecting against zombies.

My issue with a train, or anything that isn't squarly anchored away from zombies is a big risk.

Trains are a much smaller risk compared to hoarding up in a building, but still...

                                          Not moving, you're dying.
