I have to create a VLAN for an Ubuntu server running on ESXi 6 and wasn't sure if I need to create the VLAN tagging on the Ubuntu server's NIC, as well as the VMware vSwitch and physical switch or just the vswitch and physical switch. Anyone know?

You should just need to create it on the vSwitch and add it to the trunk on the physical switch. Unless you're trunking multiple VLANs to the Ubuntu server, it should be ignorant of the fact that there's a VLAN at all.

exactly - the choice if yours - you can do it on one side or the other, but if you do it on the VM, you need to make sure the VMWare vSwitch doesn't strip it off.

Don't forget if you're using multiple hosts you will want to mirror the vSwitch config across all hosts in order to maintain vMotion mobility.

Cool. Thanks guys. I will tag the vswitch and the physical switch and make sure that the vswitch exists on all 3 of my hosts.

Does anyone know why I don't have the option to tag the traffic? I have the options for External Switch Tagging "0" and Virtual Guest Tagging VGT "4095". Where is my VST option?

OMG. I feel dumb. LOL - But in my defense, you don't normally type into a drop down menu.

Don't feel dumb. I find the vSphere web client pretty freakin' unintuitive myself.

@crustachio Totally agree. I also hate how slow it is. The C# client is way better.
