This is my theory: you will need USB to Molex + Molex to Sata just to make it works.

I know you want it to works as temporary solution, but if it is my PC I would install Molex to Sata, and wire it outside the case. This way I have sata power + esata cable.

Also commonly found around IT shops are the USB to IDE/SATA adapters, most of which came with a wall power supply to molex / SATA

            Something like this will work...

Evercool EC-ST001 eSATA 15.75", USB power cable 31.5" eSATA Cable For SATA HDD and SSD M-M

It uses usb for power, and esata for data.

Good call but only for 2.5", 3.5" need 12v IIRC

Yea... no way you can power a 3.5" off of USB... it needs external power.

Yes, I did not specify that. I am only using a 2.5 drive.

In the comments someone mentioned that you probably can power a 2.5 since those are powered off 5 V, but definitely can't do 3.5 drives as they run from 12 V.

You can buy standard USB enclosures for 2.5" drives and they never need external power.

when I posted that it I was responding to the title of the sale indicating SSD - so I jumped the gun a bit on the 2.5.. my bad.
