So you were thinking of running AppAssue right on the DL380? Could you still use the DL380 for but without buying any additional drives? Then only buy the storage separately?

Yes I can do that.
And when you say run AppAssure right on the DL380, I will virtualize it. Hyper-V most likely.

Yeah I was thinking the same. Buy old tiny drives off Ebay... replace the drive.
But then again, going that route and using internal disk is probably not the way to go.. external disk is probably better.

The smallest, cheapest option would be a Synology DS214 two bay, RAID 1 NAS unit. It will do GigE NFS or iSCSI or SMB, and you can put 7200 RPM or even 10K drives in it. $299 for the NAS, then whatever for two drives.
