@Jason It's still a fact that the memory is no longer made or very rarely made.

That's not the only reason Kingston is just ridiculous prices anyway.

Not a bad price. Is this for home? Proliants like this are insanely loud.

What's the best option for quite home ones. is something like an HP z or Dell precision workstations the only good options for something quiet?

Dell tends to be quieter than HP. No perfect option. Workstations can be good choices or custom builds. Or just a really well insulated basement room.

At the price of that HP Proliant DL360 G5 I'm tempted to get one to test, and see if I can just disconnect some of the fans, and wire the RPM sensor together and see how quiet and hot it runs.

Look for the DL380 rather than the DL360, much better drive options. Price is typically almost the same. We have a DL385 G5. Still a good unit.

          I found a DL380 for $190 with shipping.

How many drive bays does it offer in that configuration?

Not bad. Not a huge upgrade but you can work with eight pretty well.

If you get one and it's horrifically loud, just take the fans out and replace them - hard to find good quiet 40mm for that 2U though.

I have 2 DL380 G5's still in production (8 years old). I want to migrate off of them and use them as a backup applicance - but damn the drives are not cheap.
RAID 6 - eight 1 TB drives would cost me around $2K, and give me 6 TB of storage.

Makes me seriously consider other choices which cheaper drive options, but then with a chassis for them, still looking around the same cost and no compute power (thinking NAS).

That's a lot considering for backup you can get a 6TB RAID 1 array for a fraction of that cost.
