If you have a second DC, the secondary DNS should point there rather than to the gateway.

If you don't have a second DC, then it should be blank.

Making heads and tails of text files...

By default, the head and tail commands each give an output of ten lines. That's not bad, and for many things it is all that we need. But there are times that it would be nice to get more or less from these commands.

To get head to give us a different number of lines, just add the number of lines that you wish to be returned following a hyphen, as it if were a normal flag. Here is an example to return the top five lines of a file.

    # head -5 /var/log/messages

Strangely, and I have no explanation for this, tail works similarly but not exactly the same. The tail command needs a "-n" flag followed by the number of lines that we wish to extract. So if we wanted to see the final eighteen lines of a text file we would do it like so:

    # tail -n 18 /var/log/messages

@scottalanmiller We had an issue where jquery was calling to the web, and we addressed that a couple of weeks ago. I do not think there are any other calls to the outside web.

Could be calls going through the DC's DNS but need to resolve externally for some reason, too.

@scottalanmiller Thanks, I did have them assigned as dedicated resources/DCs.

It was definitely a bug in the Pertino client (build 520):
So after dealing with Pertino support, they recommended I try the previous build (510) and that seems to have corrected the issue. They mentioned there were some other problems that led them to pull down the 520 build from the site and replace it with the 510. Support said that a new build (526) should be released soon.

Just got a confirmation from Vitelity, they do use UDP.

Really useless. They use UDP for what? SIP (not normal) or RTP (normal) or both?

only if you are trying to monitor everything on a network connection - and that it requires the use of port mirroring on the switch to be of any use.

If you ARP spoof you don't need that.

Is this a practical troubleshooting process? Spoofing MACs?

Oh no, not practical for troubleshooting. I was just pointing out it can be done without needing access to the switch. I wasn't trying to correct you, just pointing it out for anyone else reading through.

I'm probably going to go for state jobs. I'm paid in bread and water currently so it's a big step up for me and a pretty secure job from what I'm told. I also miss working on a team.

My take on that is, as a general thing...

The more secure a "job" is, the less secure the "career" is.

This is all interesting stuff. I can't wait to finish my server build. Here it is if you're interested: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/9gPqjX

Is this server for a home lab?

    Yessir

    Nice!

I'm going to experiment with SSD caching on a software raid using ZFS Striped Mirrored Vdev’s as well as a ton of VM testing.

Just curious, which hypervisor are you planning to use? I'm assuming you'll be passing the drives through to a vm running the storage?

You can set VMs to run at boot too. That doesn't solve the issue but it could alleviate some downtime.

Setting them to start at boot breaks HA and isn't recommended.

Right, HA would be a separate mechanism to handle this. In this case it sounds like it may be a lab server so HA isn't necessary. Although that is good info if I do work in an HA setup.

When I was first hanging my own shingle as an IT consultant we were suggesting to all of our clients that they should purchase and install AV everywhere.

Even in the 1990s that was ridiculous. How does someone manage to get enough money to start a business or hire an IT consultant but doesn't have the brain power to use AV?

A third party uninstaller is often necessary for SEP. This is one of the reasons that people use to show that it is legitimately classified as malware. Once you desire to remove it and it will not let you do so, you have a malware situation.
