I ask - does saying Linux really matter though? Isn't it much more important to actually list the distro? At least the OP asked specifically Linux Distro.

Which is why I listed the specific distribution and desktop. imo, it should always be linux as it is a generic term. Kind of like Windows, which one?

I read your statement like this "it should always be linux as it is a generic term.

HUH? so which side are you on?

Personally - I think the term linux should be dropped by everyone (well at least by 99.9%) because it's nearly meaningless.

Asking if something runs on linux is meaningless. Asking if something runs on Fedora or Ubuntu has meaning - because you know the actual OS you'll be running them on.

the generic nature of 'linux' is one of the most confounding confusers for laypeople. We should just drop it. it doesn't matter. We never talk about the Windows Kernel, or the Mac OS Kernel - We talk about Windows 10 (OK, we're starting to run into a problem here too because there are 7 versions of Windows 10 - and the same can be said for Mac OS). But if we drop the word linux, people can start talking about Fedora or Ubuntu, etc and suddenly the world becomes a smaller, much more manageable place.

Actually Linux should mean the same as Windows or MacOS anymore as you pointed out.

What specific build is what matters. W10R1510, W10R1809, Fedora, MacOS wtf ever those are called.

No - I disagree - Linux isn't like Windows or MacOS at all - Linux is not an OS - Windows/MacOS are OSes.

If you say, runs on Windows, you can be pretty damned sure it's going to run on Windows 10. if you say it runs on Linux, you have no clue if that's Fedora, Ubuntu, etc. And while we might be able to get it to work, the layperson would never even try with the requires to get onto a linux Distro it's not designed for.

Actually if it says runs on linux, it will run on pretty much all of them.

The developer may only provide binaries or packages for certain specific distros. But if it builds on one, it will build on pretty much all of them.

I gave you that out already - but I also said - normals will never do that. Which is the whole purpose of my comments... it's about normals, laypeople. Not IT pros.

      people like me !
Well worse than me I guess.

Are vendors like Meraki doing anything more than a traditional VPN site to site setup? I don't normally think of vendors like that in conjunction with SD-WAN.

I've got to figure out how I can run in parallel with 2 different network/subnets

      Why change the IP scheme?

Preference & it's an easy way to identify "rogue" devices.
      Current scheme is 192.168.1.x
      I'll do a 10.200.10.x (or something similar)
Which means I should never see any device with a 192.168.1.x address on the network.

This part is simple, you just add the 10.X.X.X to everything and add a rule to route between it and the 192.

You don't care about connectivity at this point.

Everyone will still use the old LoB app on the new network, you jsut might have to teach them to runas or something depending on how it actually runs.

Simplified, but you get the idea.

Is anyone using the ubiquiti unifi video software?

I am and I also have Wyze.

What cameras are you using with the Ubiquiti nvr?

Does the ubiquiti unifi only work with ubiquiti cameras

      Stolen from their forum:

the UniFi Video software (UFV) only works with Ubiquiti cameras and that the UniFi Video Cameras (UVC) only work with UniFi Video software. Ubiquiti is on record as stating that there is no intention for UFV to support other brands of camera.

The Unifi Video software can stream an RTSP feed of each camera, but the cameras have to connect to Unifi Video first.

Just a note on this in case it's missed. All of the G3 camera's, when setting them up, provide the option for "standalone" (your own RTSP server) or "UniFi Video" (their software/hardware) in the later firmware.
I have a few G3-Flex going to BlueIris without issue and no UFV in the chain.

      Correct.

@dafyre said in Backup Options - Licensing Costs - Storage Targets:

When we start looking, we'll start with the usual culprits like Veeam. ShadowProtect comes highly recommended to me by several folks (Including the guy who just built the ReadyNAS)... We'd hit the other major players as well.

So cost is going to bite you in the ass, since you said there were concerns about licensing. But they are all valid options.

@dafyre said in Backup Options - Licensing Costs - Storage Targets:

Good Backup Compression / Deduplication is a must. We have ~30TB of systems and data.

You can perform the compression on your storage layer or use dedup or both. This may affect the overall performance though.

@dafyre said in Backup Options - Licensing Costs - Storage Targets:

We don't care if it's full install, agent based, or Hypervisor based. It just needs to work.

Based on this I would think Agent based would be a decent option. But didn't you say you have something along the lines of 300 VMs? Might become tedious.

Yeah, we'd likely do the dedupe at the Storage layer. Our Current Nimble devices do this relatively well with our live data. Something like 1.3 or 1.4 to 1 compression is what i remember. It may be more or less.

If we went Agent based, we can push the agents via PDQ Deploy for Windows and a shell script or something for Linux. (Most of our Production Linux systems are SLES 12)... If reboots are required, systems can be rebooted during our patch window... (5-7am every day).

Just remember that per the Win10 EULA, you can only virtualize Win10 if it's the only licensed Windows VM.

I don't have it in front of me to verify, but that's what I remember reading on there. Will verify a bit later.

Thats not the issue. And not the case. VDI licensing gets you around that. But nothing gets you around the no-server use EULA.

Did not know VDI was involved in the OPs case.

Its the licensing for more than one Windows workstation on a server.

Is there anyone out there using OV non-company wide with spread payments?

If so, I am trying to find out if I should purchase all licenses that I think I MAY need upfront?

If I can add to my license (additional CAL's or Server License), how is it calculated if it is during middle of the license year?

All of our clients, and us too, run Open Value Agreement with the spread payment option. Company-wide was too restrictive so we never did go with it.

Here are the numbers I get using MS License Advisor (for part numbers) with pcm.com pricing.
      Does that look roughly correct?

Yeah that's why I wrote this. That virt module doesn't support cloning systems. I never got around to linking that module. I'll see if I can find it again. You just need to put it in your local module library and then you can call it like any other module.
