      Laphroaig is excellent

Are these ones I can get in the USA?

Yes, fairly easy to get if you shop around. Talisker will be anywhere, that's in the basic scotch list any self respecting little liquor store will have. Laphroaig is rarer but still available in any larger liquor store for the most part. I've bought it in a few different states.

Ok, sweet. Good to know. Between the two, which do you think is better? I know that's a matter of opinion, but I'm just curious.

There are good scotches... rather painful for those who don't normally drink them. Are these for people who like scotch, or random people?

Most drinkers will say Laphroaig is better. It's like liquefied dirt. It's strong, painful, it hates you... like a good scotch should. Drinking it is an experience.

Islay scotch are not for wimps.

If you are less sure of the audience, Talisker. Still a harsh, man's scotch, but not SO harsh.

Laphroaig makes you cry inside a bit.

Eh? I'd never describe Laphroaig as that. I find it pretty smooth. It's my wife's favourite, she's not a big whisky drinker but she likes the smokiness of Islay whiskies.

AJ, you might want to take a look here:
              https://blog.thewhiskyexchange.com/2015/11/jim-murrays-whisky-bible-2016-the-winners/
I've never drunk a $100 whisky - I imagine that should get you something pretty special! For what's it worth, Glenmorangie is my favourite scotch, but I only get their cheapest 10 year old stuff.

The best whisky in the world is Canadian apparently.

It's what my wife drinks, too.

I think you drink it a lot and don't realize it. In the US, even Talisker can approach $100. Especially in Texas where Scotch is more costly than in NY. Scotch is far cheaper in the UK than in the US. I suspect that our good bourbons have a price penalty over there, as well. But the Scotchs you drink are in the $100 category here and Walker Blue is double that.

I've notice a 1,000% markup on wines coming from Spain to the US as well. What is $2 in Spain is $20 in the States. The US liquor market expects prices that would never fly in Europe.

I mostly drink Jim Beam, which at £13 a 70cl bottle is just about the cheapest whisky you can buy in the UK (I appreciate that probably doesn't count as good bourbon, but I like it).

I'm not a Scotch drinker but the few I know swear by Glenlivet. Every time I try it I just get the distinct taste of wood bark and lighter fluid.

Balvenie, Glenlivet, Macallen, Glenfidich. Those are all good Highland scotchs

I love Jim Beam, and I LOVE bourbon, but alas I can no longer drink bourbon...first time I ever got sick (only happened twice) was after polishing off a bottle of Kentucky Fire (Fireball bourbon basically, made by Jim Beam) with a couple friends one night...I think the extra sugar in the cinnamon made me sick and I can't even stand the smell of bourbon now, which makes me VERY sad...maybe in a few years...

Oh so many options! I'm looking for some good top shelf stuff...not like millionaire level spending, but something that's around $100/bottle or even a bit more.

I have a friend that really wants to start getting into GOOD scotches, and I owe him a few favors, so now that I got the other job, I promised him that once I've got a couple things squared away, I'm gonna get us some good scotch and we're gonna have a night we stay in and polish it off together. 🙂

I've tried the 16, 18, and 22 Glenlivet. The 22 was surprisingly smooth. The 16 was harsh.

I think that's what my friend Mike has is Glenlivet, but I'd have to ask him.

@thanksajdotcom If he likes Glenlivet he will like Glenfiddich too. I know in Texas, the 12yr Glenfiddich is $60 bottle... but you should be able to find a 15, 18, and 21yr bottle as well.

Texas is actually much more expensive than NY for that stuff, believe it or not. Weird, I know.
