@scottalanmiller Are we talking about mobile phone plan, or home phone plan? I know they are sometimes one and the same in the states, but we have different here - my home is 40meg fibre, completely unlimited usage for £15/month. My mobile has 100 Minutes, unlimited texts and 2GB 4G data for £11/month - plus no roaming charges in USA/Canada/Australia/Most of Europe etc...I could upgrade to unlimited internet for about £8/month more...but don't really use mobile data much!

I mentioned both. Mine happen to be from the same ISP right now (both T-Mobile) but one is in my name and one is not so they are only coincidentally both from the big pink T. I get no caps on either.

@NattNatt You all make US look terrible. (pun intended) Maybe one day I'll be able to do something about it!

I know of nowhere in the US that has combined mobile and home data plans. Might exist, but it is rare. Never even heard a rumour of that.

This is going back like 10 years or so when we Visited California - their Mobile was linked to their Home number etc...I was young so might have easily been confused 😛

Their mobile was, and not just a wireless house phone? That used to be sort of common.

Yeah, it's out there and cheap enough, just no need for it at the moment! 😛 I'm on 3, and their coverage etc are cheap enough for me - I used to be on T-mobile, but they merged with Orange to become EE in the UK...and they hiked their prices up super high - when I got back from the Falklands, I looked into it and I'd have been paying double for less if I went with EE, so went with the cheaper option 😉

@scottalanmiller honestly couldn't tell you! My memory for last week is bad enough, let alone 10 years ago when I was knee high to a grasshopper 😉

T merged with Orange and they didn't just make it Brown? Opportunity missed.

yeah no cap, but once you reach something like 10 GB download, you're reduced to 3G speeds.. it might even be at something like 4 GB of download.

@scottalanmiller same with 3 - If I go unlimited, it is exactly that, fully unlimited usage for yourself on your phone - the only limit is when you're using your phone as a hotspot - it limits you to 4GB as a hotspot or something...

huh - so you have a non US T-mobile contract?

I could have sworn when I looked at the contract, it was limited to that anywhere - actually it was worse.. when traveling outside the US, all data was 3G only.

That's not a cap. I have an unlimited 3G data plan. how much more would I want on a phone? 3G is plenty fast.

Only sort of, since LTE is often faster than 4G and is 3G.

Add to that that we now pay for bandwidth on metered connections again (through mobile carriers) we users don't want to pay for something we didn't ask for.

I beg to disagree about only mobile carriers having caps. DSL Reports.com has all kinds of stories on usage caps being placed on fixed lines all the time. Basically anywhere in the US that only cable and DSL is available will be capped soon, if it's not already.

You're correct, many land line type ISPs now also have caps, but those caps are not hit by typical usage, so I wasn't counting them.

The caps on mobile data are pretty easy to hit, especially if mobile is the only data you have.

now, with things like Netflix and Youtube at 4K, those caps on Landlines will start being a real problem.
