I'm running into a weird issue. When my users open excel files on our file server it's telling them that another user has the file open but when I go into Share and Storage Management it shows that no one else has that file open but the user. If they close the file and re-open it they can save it. If they keep the file open after saving it initially it tells them the file is open. It seems like this would be a communication issue but it's not occurring with any other file types except excel files. Also, all of these files were fine yesterday and no changes were made.

Have you tried restarting the file server?

Simple test... start a long running ping between a problem workstation and the file server in question. Let it run for an hour. Then see if you are getting packet losses.

@scottalanmiller It's not a workstation issue though.Anyone accessing excel files from the file server runs into this as well. it's weird.

What version of excel are they saving the files to?

Seen this type of thing loads of times. Excel likes to be dumb.

@Breffni-Potter Example file was created December 30, 2014. Created in Excel 2010 and being edited in 2010. We do have different files that were created in different version but all excel files this applies to.

The weird thing is if I give full access permissions there is no problem. I hope that gives you insight.

UPDATE: Scatch that. Still an issue. It's only here and there. Sometimes she can leave the file open and itll save ten times in a row and then it won't.

So the excel file itself is definitely a 2010 extension?

@Breffni-Potter Yes it's labeled as a Microsoft Excel Worksheet (the example file--although it applies to all excel files)

Excel is mean for things like this.

Been so long since I looked at it 😞

It's really weird. I also am not getting this error on the administrator account however I do on my own personal account which is an administrator. Keep in mind no permissions options have been changed between yesterday and today. I have no idea.

Windows updates? Event log entries on the file-server?

No updates applied although I just started receiving Virtual Disk Service errors in event viewer.

If I had to take a guess it would be an issue with Symantec Backup Exec and mounted volumes. I'm checking though.

I'm right. Something to do with Backup Exec not mounting the volume correctly on my backup server is shutting off the Virtual Disk Service. So I'm sure the server restarts the service, it works temporarily and then it turns it off again so on and so forth. Interesting problem. I turn off the backup server temporarily to test and it isn't doing that anymore.

Nice find - similar weird problems like my disk issue this morning causing files to have no permissions.
