Has anyone looked at the demo? Just fired it up, but so far, it seems quite impressive.

Yeah that's impressive for only 10 months of work.

User of RMM here, some days I spent more time fighting with labtech then needed.

Definitely agree. Feels very responsive. Whilst many of the the other RMM haven't managed to move into the current century with their half baked baked web interface.

Who's up for using it in "production"?

What would you describe MeshCentral as? Remote Support tool?

I don't know about production, but I may just give it a shot for my "friends and family" group.

                      Sounds like "production" to me!

Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place but I don't see any Linux agents?

There are none. It's described as a "Windows system", as most RMM are, sadly. That's a major gap, no Linux, no Mac. So while it's got amazing potential, our own in house system still does all of that. It lacks that sweet interface, but it's got loads more monitoring and compatibility. But, this is just a few months of work. So I suspect he just started on Windows and once that's pretty feature complete, then he'll get to work on other OSes.

I installed it in my home-lab tonight. The install is smooth if you can follow instructions.

Sounds like someone copying SodiumSuite now that the project is on ice. It's the logical approach.

I swear when we first looked at this, that they were using Salt under the hood. At some point they moved to a Go agent that they built themselves. Which I think makes sense, we felt that the same approach would be necessary give limitations in using the Salt agent. Seems like a lot of work is getting done on this.

Looking through the commit history, they've always used/still use the SaltStack APIs but the agent used to be Python. It switched to Go in October.

Looking through the demo it's definitely a slick looking solution. One of the issues I see with it is that you wouldn't have 24/7 support like with other products.

This would be for the small MSP shops that want to roll their own solution.

No, we do that, and this is the alternative to rolling our own.

Sure, but have you dealt with many RMM solutions? Having "support" doesn't imply that it works or that they can fix it. It sounds nice, and maybe you can find a good vendor, and Tactical is still Alpha so I'm not saying people should jump on this, just that "supported" solutions have been so bad for us that it took more manpower to fix their stuff for them than to roll our own.

I mean roll your own as in, not purchasing a support package from a NOC like continuum.

Something your team would setup and maintain.

That's more "running a product." Rolling your own means building it yourself. Just installing software without a vendor to hold your hand isn't rolling your own in any sense. That's how we run 99% of supported software. It's not like we ever engage Microsoft, Red Hat, Adobe, etc. when installing their products. So other than the fallback option of reaching out to someone (which Tactical might have more than those mentioned other than RH) for assistance if we get stuck, it's the same.
