IMO if you want performance, don't use an old Netbook.
PuppyLinux should work fine.

It's not about performance... though some would be nice. This netbook will take direct 12v DC input for power. so it works portable in the auto nicely and without any conversion losses.

Yup,.. that and other portable uses, like programming the radio in the truck. I have two older laptops,.. the Netbook and an HP - for size and such, I would rather keep the Netbook, even with it's limitations.
If I could find a more modern system that runs on 12v, has HDMI, etc... I would head that direction. Also looking at the rPi,.. but it's not at the same level.. (now if I could convince someone to re-right the code to allow for a rPi cluster,.. that could work.

If you are bold use, window managers only like i3.

that's plenty of power to use a normal distro. Don't get weird, the era of special small Linux for ancient hardware is gone. Old hardware today is powerful enough to run normal distros.

Fedora MATE should work great.

@scottalanmiller 2GB is not enough for Fedora workstation, or ubuntu desktop. Unless you like waiting a lot. I have tried it.

Enough with a lighter desktop. Should work just fine.

Deeping might but I am not sure what kind of CPU, Puppy linux is small like 50MB or so and low usage of RAM but it can take a toll on RAM with KDE the last time I used it.

Korora and Deepin are out - they caused issues with some of the external hardware I need to be able to work with.

Any distro with a light desktop. Linux per se is not really memory hungry. Try lxqt/lxde.
