So I need a pair of hosts for the next iteration of our ERP system.

      Cannot:

      • Be HP (I don't know why, but the Boss has a bone to pick with HP.)
      • Be hyperconverged or blades

      Has to be:

      • MS Hyper-V Server 2016
      • 2 hosts (Preferably 1U)
      • Rack mounted
      • 3.0 GHz or faster procs (Assuming dual sockets, asking for clarification. No info on cores)
      • 128 GB RAM (No info on type of RAM)
      • 10k disk for VM OS
      • 15k or SSD for SQL drives (RAID1 is an option, but RAID10 would be preferred). I'm sure RAID5 under SSD would possibly be acceptable.

      No money budget.

I'm looking at Dell's R630's. Does anybody have any recommendations?

Okay, well, a budget wasn't stated. Typically, I find something that will work for 4-8 years and see if he bites.

Why two hosts if you are forbidden to use them for HA?

He doesn't understand HA. He prefers IPOD because that is what he is familiar with.

@nerdydad We run our production hosts 3 years, then they become a backup host for another 3 years.

After 6 years the server is retired. Our backup hosts have replicates of the VM's on the production host.

That's like being familiar with a car crash so refusing to drive on the road.

This is what we are considering doing as well. 2 locations. Colocation will host the Product system while the hot site (my server room) will host the replicates.

@nerdydad we have 2 sites and each site has a production host and a backup host.

The backup host has replicas for both the local site, and a remote site.

The thought being that if one site (burns to the ground, etc.) we have just fire up the VM's at the other site

Isn't that more like being familiar with car crashes so he doesn't wear his seat belt?

@scale What would you recommend with the specs above? PM me if necessary.

Why can it not be hyperconverged? How is that so explicitly stated when it could possibly be exactly what is needed?

That's like the boss saying "we don't want exactly what we need, even if it's cost effective. We want something else."

Right, cart before the horse. Deciding the solution without evaluating the problem.

Does the R630 chassis have enough bays for your storage? I don't see a total capacity for the SQL drives. You can pack 24 of the 1.8" drives in the thing, and I guess if money is no object 23TB of SSD should handle most loads.

FFS. You all need to just STFU about the money no limit and wtf no budget thing.

Nothing in his post insinuated either no money or unlimited money.

                                            Just fuck....
