We do this by email. By HR policy, an email goes out to 'Management' which includes each department manager, lead tech, etc. They then either walk around or email others that someone is gone for the day. Person gone also sets their OOO message.

        There's always email, lol.

Yeah, seriously, why is email not the answer here?

This was my first thought - what's wrong with email? it's trackable, not stuck in someone's phone, easy to update groups, etc.

Because of people, they just don’t read emails. People are glued to their phones...

You might be able to program Twilio to have users opt-in to a notify group, then when somebody is sick or whatever, they message the number and it forwards to all users that are enrolled... That way its easy to adapt to new hires, etc.

Not positive that it can do this, but I was reading some of their stuff on notifications and SMS and it really sounds possible.

Exactly, email and text show up the same since, you know, 2006.

That end users choose to ignore some messages and read others means two things...

                          1. Either format will be ignored at random, choosing text is just as likely to be ignored as email, it's totally random.
                          2. They are choosing to ignore the message, which makes it not the company's problem.

I don't know any non techs that have a smart phone who don't have email on it. This is not a real issue.

I do know people who choose to still have flip phones, and those people could likely have email on their phone, but don't - and they also choose not to use texting either.

Because of people, they just don’t read emails. People are glued to their phones...

my email is on my phone.. I read it the same as I read txts.

I get it, it makes sense to us but to users is a different story 😞

But these are techs right? I'd be very surprised if they also didn't have email on the phone.

If they are techs I can see that.

Anyone who needs to be reached would fall into the category of "should have email."

Yeah, seriously, why is email not the answer here?

Okay, that's totally fine. I am just going by experience of my last three jobs. They have it but they ignore it purposefully.

Oh sure, but that makes it a success. Once they are purposefully ignoring management, there is nothing wrong with the tech. In fact, that they have to purposefully ignore their managers is basically proof that the tech decision was correct.
